I am looking to details of people in the UK who are in the process of either planning or building their own boat
please e-mail me with a brief description of the project picture if possible any problems (solutions to problems)you have found please do not send any more e-mails after 10/7/2006 many thanks

I am doing some research for a project and are more interested in theboats that are in various states of construction or nearing the end of the construction

How can they email you, if they don't have your email address (which I don't suggest you put on a forum publicly by the way)

You will really need to give people some sort of incentive as to why they should go to all this work and trouble for you, maybe a copy of final report to see what other problem solving others have done etc.

ok I thought my e-mail address would be accessible however here it is as follows andy@chapai.demon.co.uk
although I cannot go into the details of why I am looking for boat builders across the UK I am however willing to speak to the site administrator and will explain to him in the strictest confidence why I am looking for this information this I do realise it could be of work for the boat but I am not looking for a book just a brief synopsis of the boat and maybe a picture (not necessary) and maybe stories relating to your experiences building your dream
I am myself a boat enthusiast althoughI do not own a boat I was for eight years a member of the RNxs
if the site administrator wishes to e-mail me send I will them my phone number so I may be contacted in person
many thanks

The moderators aren't going to have an issue with such a request. We frequently have maritime students doing projects asking for help on the forums. What I'm saying is that to get any number of people to volunteer information, you need to give them sort of reason ie a worthwhile project behind the request, aiding a student, or providing information gathered back to the contributors

Even if the administrators agree to your post, it isn't going to gain much confidence of other posters here unless they know exactly what you want it for and what you are going to do with the information they provide. I have posted info on my boat, but at my choice, and I know I wouldn't be too keen on providing the info on request without knowing the full extent to what it would be used for.

This is not aimed at you personally... it happens every time someone puts a rather open ended inquizitive type of post.

Thank you for your comments
however I cannot give a public explanation as it is covered under a confidentiality agreement but as previously said if the forum administrator would like to contact me via e-mail I will give him/her my phone number so that my intentions can be verified if anybody would like to contribute that is entirely up to them there are no guarantees that that the information received will be used
however any data not used will be deleted and if the project goes ahead all they will only be a small number of contributors that will be asked to participate
this will be by e-mail with an explanation of the project and asking them if they would like to participate
many thanks

so lets be clear here you have signed a confidentiality agreement with somebody to carry out some research and you are expecting home boat builders to pass you details of what they are doing, how and where and you may or may not use it for whatever your purpose is and this will be decided between you and you third party.

Does not sound like an attractive proposition does it?

Yes, Building own Boat. 2.5years into a 3 year project.
Steel hull, Van de Stadt 40. any further details provided, after reasons for information request supplied.

Similar, refurbuishing 48ft Steel Hulled Dutch Motor Yacht, also agree with comment about further details. But have been at this since November 2004, had a time scale but threw that out of the window as the extent of the corrosion became apparent, so no idea how long this piece of 'string' is going to be !!!

[/ QUOTE ] Bit particular aren't you? What happens after then. Do you explode or something?

Yes, I have completed my own boat.

General Rule - never to put more effort into helping someone than they are prepared to put into helping themselves.

Sorry matey, you are ringing all the wrong bells.''Non disclosure'' etc...
Why don't you drive around a few boatyards and introduce yourself personally to those who are (probably busy!) self building? Then you can interact too.
