I want to fit a holding tank to my boat. I have looked at the USCG requirements in their Marine Safety Manual, Volume II, Chapter 18 which gives good data on daily use rates, but doesnt really give any guidance or recomendations on the number of days capacity. Is there anyone on the forum from USA or who has a holding tank, who can give advice please???

our experience with a normal marine toilet is that a 50 gallon tank serves two people for about a week. there are low-volume toilets designed for inland waterways which do better.

we in fact have two heads, each with its own tank (the hollow keels of our cat). by having the rule for one head of 'no paper or solids' and pumping it out every so often we can extend the life of the other tank to 2-3 weeks. this practice is ok in marinas & anchorages but of course not strictly legal in us waters.
