Holding tank pump out deck fitting - what size ?

Hi,

Although I haven't installed a heads holding tank yet, I want to buy the deck fitting at the same time as I buy my fuel and water deck fittings so they match and look nice. I haven't really looked into the ht stuff properly yet so could somebody kindly give me the executive briefing on the best/"correct" size of deck fitting to use for this ? Should it be 2" or 1.5" or what ?

I have read that the further you get away from civilization the bigger the fuel filler nozzles are. That is logical as most boats refueling in a distant port (say) The Azores would be large commercial fishing craft. I have a 2 inch fuel filler but most serious cruising people would probably think that is too small.

I had a concern over whether the deck fitting I had on my new yacht needed an adaptor to fit pump-out stations as my previous yacht had. After getting a number of inputs I was assured by many, including a very helpful reply from Leesan, that what I had was good.
It seems the EU Recreational Craft Directive means yachts approved since its introduction must accept a ISO8099 pump-out probe. This needs a deck fitting of ~50mm. Apparantly there is an adaptor that will make a still better fit but according to reports I got from users this is not necessary.
My only remaining concern is the pump-out stations I used to visit on the south coast which I assume have been modified, and the fact that many deck fittings have chains to prevent loss of the cap - these off course prevent the suction so need to be removed.

It depends on the size of the outlet on your tank. On mine the top outlets are 2 inch, and the deck fittings are the same, but as no local pump out stations have probes to reach down to the bottom of the tanks I have had to put in new deck fittings, which are 1.5 inch (38mm) connected by hose and tee piece to the outlets at the bottom of the tanks. As stated above the chain that retains the cap needs to be removed

A pump out fitting which confirms to the ISO standard 8099:2000 will not have a chain for the cap.

I suppose there are various standards used in various countries and in the short run it might be best to install on the boat something that matches what is available on shoreside facilities in the cruising area. But EU seems to have adopted the ISO standard mentioned, so for the OP it might be best to follow that. Discharge in coastal waters is or will be banned in many countries, I think. Here from next year.

The pump out deck fittings I've found online that meet the ISO standard are very large with a 65mm hole saw cut out and 100mm overall fitting. They appear to accept either 1.5 or 2" hose via a reducer on the bottom of the fitting.

This seems like a very large hole/fitting and I've not noticed anything as large as this on other boats.

Anyone point me in the right direction for something a little smaller or do the UK pump out stations have cone shaped adaptors to overcome different deck fittings not to the ISO standard?
