Holding Tank Pressurising

I can understand why large holding tanks might have baffles to help stop the waste sloshing around but why does your holding tank have compartments?

the tank is very long, (2.5m) and shallow (0.3m), (0.7m wide) iirc
if I take out the utility room floor, for acces to some seacocks, rudder, pumps, etc which are around this tank,
you will stand on the tank,
and in order not to put too much stress on the tank, we decided to put 2 or 3 partitions or baffles as you call them

you have to see it to understand :-)

Well, we have established that the vent is definitely blocked. It is very solidly so at the spigot at the tank exit. Unfortunately the spigot is right angled as it leaves the tank and rodding with a spiral drain unblocker hasn't done it. Mr Muscle drain cleaner now in place and keeping our fingers crossed. If that doesn't work we will have to remove the spigot. Hoping the bolts securing it are captive otherwise they will drop into the tank when we remove the nuts. Surely they won't have been that silly......... to be continued.

Thats good news. At least you've found the problem. I hope!

Not wishing to tempt fate but I think we have solved the problem. We removed the spigot (fortunately the bolts were captive and didn't fall into the ****) and found a solid plug in the metal sleeve and in the tank aperture, both of which are quite small. Not sure what the plug consisted of or how it got there but perhaps there are some things it's better not to know!

Thanks to our engineer Pete Ellis of A1 Marine Maintenance for persevering with a very unpleasant job and also for the helpful advice from you all.

Richard.

Sorry I have to ask:) but how does this statement tie up with the spigot blockage

Thanks, Rob - that is the obvious answer but we have poured water down the vent and it reaches the tank.

I had a similar problem. A mechanic changed the macerator, some time ago. Since then the holding tank always seemed full. Pee would come out of the breather each time. Took the tank out, thinking there must be some sort of blockage and cleaned it.

The tank was filling with sea water, each time we emptied it, so it was always full, a none return valve and turning the sea water tap off, solved it.

Tuther problem is/was available for folk that remember the Exploding Bog Story.

Good questions both. We assumed the water was going into the tank as it disappeared down the pipe. On reflection I think it must have diverted into the swans neck of the macerator and onwards. That's unless somebody else has any other views.

Yup think you're right, thats the only place it could go. Anyway let us know whether you have solved the problem

Hopefully this will be my last post to this thread. 36 hours or so on and everything seems to be working OK. Still can't really understand how the plug got started. Perhaps it got lodged there when the tank was quite full and we were in a rolling beam sea. Once lodged I guess it would solidify over time. We don't put any paper into the toilets but you never know what guests may do! Anyway it's fingers crossed now. Once again thanks for all the helpful responses.

Richard.
