My steel holding tank is integral to the hull of my steel yacht, i.e. the sloping bottom of the tank is the hull plating. It is my understanding that the acid in urine is pretty corrosive to steel. At the moment there is some breakdown of the original paint coating (whatever that was) and some superficial rust but no scale. According to ultrasound there is no significant loss of plate thickness yet. I have pretty good access to the inside of the tank via 4 inspection covers, but they are too small to admit power tools. The toilet is bolted down onto the top of the tank. Boat is 10 years old but methinks holding tank prob has not had a lot of use.

So- what should I do? To cut off the top of the tank and fit a custom tank inside would drastically reduce tank volume. The toilet is already a bit high for comfort so don't want to raise it further.
Does anyone know of an effective coating that I could apply to the inside of the tank that would be pee-proof and poo-proof, given that I don't eat curry? /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif Tank is dry inside but it would be difficult to remove every trace of rust, so product would need to be tolerant of imperfect surface prep. I'm wondering about tar-type products - VC Tar/others or Primocon such as one might use on cast iron keels?
I'd appreciate any thoughts/advice. Cheers.

Re: Easier said than done!

Flush urine straight overboard...I can't see any reason to put it in the holding tank.
Possible solutions to treat the tank (too late for tears): stabilise the rusty areas with one of the phosphoric treatments (easy): then use liquid rubber, 2 or 3 coats (brand name I've used is RUBSON, not for the same problem - which I wouldn't wish on anybody - but under the loo/shower area). Forms a watertight coat.
