Read somewhere that you can use washing liquid instead of Elsan Blue in the holding tank with better results but I cant remember if its Bio or Non Bio liquid I should use. Anyone know which it is?

(Blue is 'orrible stuff and to my mind 'should only be used in Porta Potti type loos. In a holding tank it's quite expensive).

For the small cost something like Odorlos is quite effective and is 'natural' as it encourages the non smelly bugs to grow and break down the waste. I suspect that copious quantities of washing up liquid will inhibit any bacteria - so not helpful

If I remember rightly that's what I use. I've got bottles of the stuff on board as I bought a case :) Highly recommended.

Don't use washing up liquid unless you want foam coming out of your waste vent. I spoke to one couple who swore by live yeast if you're looking to avoid chemicals, although I haven't tried it myself.

Not washing up liquid but Bio detergent as used in your washing machine!

I suggested this to my wife, but she tells me 'BIO detergent' means it washes 'biologically', and not that it is biodegradable, so she won't be using it on 'her'(!) boat :o Personally, since we live on the non tidal river most of the year, and therfore use pump outs not overboard discharge, I dont see the issue - but then I'm not in charge! ;)

On our old boat that had a cassette bog we used bio wash liquid worked well and way cheaper than blue or green.
I believe the enzymes in the stuff feed on poo.
Now we have a pump out we use no chemicals or additives and have no smell in normal use. Slight smell when pumping out but not anything to worry about.
