I struggle to get the mast into position without help from two others. Can anyone help in sourcing a supplier (or a drawing) of an aid to assist in hoisting/lowering the mast from the mast step. I have seen a device that is fixed to the forward end of the mast, which provides extra leverage to get into the vertical position (on an old magazine cutting), but have had no luck in sourcing it.

On my old Newbridge 22footer I used to lash an aluminium ladder to the swim ladder and taffrail. This provided a stable crutch ten feet or so into the air into which to slide the mast until the heel bolt could be inserted. It was then only a short and resonable controlled hoist until the cap shrouds took over and held the mast laterally. Then the last bit was easy until the forestay was attached.

This improvised crutch also facilitated lowering.

Those days were wonderful. Now I have a 65ft mast and 6ft of draft!

my pole for lifting the mast is made from a piece of scaffold pole with a spike at one end which locates it at the base of the mast, and a couple of rings at the other end which are used for locating the down haul and spinnaker lines, and also a couple of lines out to each side to stop the pole falling off to one side. Should be easy to get a metal man to knock up.

I had an ETAP 20 for many many years, and I always raised and lowered the mast myself. If you think the procedure could be equally applicable to the ETAP 22, then I will describe it for you.

The problems get bigger exponentially!

Get the heel bolt in and you should be able to walk the mast forward supporting it from behind if you're not too slow. Of course the nearer you get to the vertical, the more the shrouds take over. Make sure you rig the height of the top of the ladder such as to not let the spreaders get in the way.
