HM Coastguard new S92 Helicopters delivered (picture)

Liked the shot of the Antonov looming up behind the little "civilian" plane....telephoto "squash" effect, I guess (unless traffic separation was a bit sloppy!)

Am I right? - the current Prestwick 'copter (rescue177?) is from HMS gannet. If one (or both) of these new ones is based here, does that mean the 'ownership of flying responsibility' to coin a phrase, is changing hands to the coastguard?

Is HMS Gannet at Prestwick still in operation. I thought it had been closed down ..

Years ago it was the home of the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm 819 Squadron of Wessex HAS MK3 and Later Sea King HAS helicopters (HAS = Helicopter Anti Submarine) They were based there to excercise the Nuclear Submarines in Faslane

There is still a SAR flight at Gannet and it always was one of the busiest in the country.

The two machines which arrived in Prestwick are now in Aberdeen and will be going to the MCA SAR base at Sumburgh on the Shetland Isles. Stornoway have already been operating their two new SAR machines (same type as the Sumburgh ones) for a couple of months now.

Those of you on the south coast will have to wait for the spring to see the new toys down there.

I'll have to keep my eyes peeled. If they are going to Sumburgh they'll fly over my house.

Haven't seen anything on Grampian tv (Sorry, STV -Harrumph), or in the P&J

Navy Sea king Rescue177 is still RN operated...(for the time being at least!!) these two S92 destined for the SAR unit at Sumburgh, and were flown to Aberdeen on Monday after having their rotor blades fitted at Prestwick the other 2 S92's for Stornoway were delivered a good few weeks back, interestingly they were also delivered by the Antanov to Prestwick but were not in HMCG colours but in aviation primer.

When I was on Gannet '49/50), it was RNAS Eglinton and our Air/sea Rescue was a Walrus!. Now it is the City of Derry Airport.

OOOH No ! FAA Aircrew still fly Harriers, Merlin, Sea King & Lynx in front line service. A Lynx squadron is now operation in Afghanistan.

The new Merling ASW Helicopter with a crew of 3 once airborne can do the same job as a frigate with a crew of 200... Only problem is it needs a Frigate to sleep on !

Its an amazing aircraft Check out Royal Navy Merlin
