I am purchasing a corvette with twin Hino 200hp engines. Any advice on where to get parts / service items greatly appreciated. If any one can recommend someone to service them on the East coast, that woukd be helpful too,

Thanks

Chinese

I am sure there will be others more helpful but I believe these are marinised Chinese truck engines.
They were fitted as a diesel option on some of the mid range Bayliners (30 - 40 ft) in the late 80's and early 90's, but were not common.
I would expect a significant discount on the "market price" of a boat such as the Corvette, which was more commonly produced with EU recognised engines (VP, Yanma, Cummins, etc).
Not that there is anything necessarily wrong with the Hino engine, but any less common make will be viewed with suspicion by purchasers and it will be assumed that spares may be problematic.

I think you'll find they're Japanese engines, company has been around for many years (80+) and is well respected in the truck/heavy commercial market. Definitely not Chinese, chalk and cheese, like comparing a Yamaha outboard to a Parsun (Chinese equivalent). Don't see many Hino engines in the marine environment although I know a few were fitted to charter boats, but how successful they were I don't know. My main concern would not be so much the engine itself but the marinisation of it. No personal experience of them so best try and find someone who has.

Hino engine help

Thanks for your comments, they are japanese and I have heard good things ablout them. I have today found put that Thornycroft marinised them but no longer hold parts. I will try Hino at Global as suggested. Thank you

Hino is the truck end of the Toyota Group. We all know what this brand means to quality!! There will be UK importers who will stock the base engine parts.

Hino Engines

Hi,

I also have a Corvette with the WO6DTI 250hp diesels, and I have found them to be excellent engines.

It's worth looking around for parts. eg oil filters from hino = £39 each !!
but from interweb = £12 each

The workshop manual free from interweb.

Loads of information from the Bayliner site.

These engines are described as "bulletproof" and do seem to have a good reputation.

Best wishes should you go ahead with the sale, and be grateful that you don't have Volvo engines!

Hino Engine spares?

Paul , thanks for that reassuring reply, We have now completed the purchase and looking forward to getting her on the water.

What sort of speed / economy do you get out of your Corvette with the larger engines?

Thanks

Chris

Hino WO6

The Hino W06 engine in a good solid motor, with plenty still operating here in Kobelco excavators and loaders. Rightly pointed out that Hino is part of Toyota.

Engine is sensitive to lube bypass Delta P. Be VERY careful using aftermarket filters. Personally I would use only Baldwin or Fleetguard as alternative to genuine.

With WO6 will cruise at 16 knots 300 rpm off the top.

I've spoken to Global who can help with all the engine parts. Just need to find someone to supply the marinisation bits such as the impellars etc.
Thanks for all your comments.

hino engines

Hi again,

I can't give you exact details as info is on the boat, however max speed we had on trials was 24.7kts. We tend to cruise at about 8.5kts and this uses about 14lts/hr.

It can be fun to open her up and dash home when the weather needs it!

There is a group of Corvette owners and we meet twice a year for lunch and one weekend in the summer for a get together. between us we can usually answer most questions. If you would like to join our little group then let me know, we are VERY informal.

For impellers use Jabsco, easy to buy and cheap, the water pump is sure to be a Johnson one (number on the face plate) there web site gives you the impella no.

If you go to facebook and look at Corvette Boats there are some Photos and info. Also Corvette Boats have there own web site with some interesting history.

Happy sailing,

Paul

P.S.

I agree with Latestarter, Fleetguard and Baldwin oil filters are ok. I've used Fleetguard for the last few years.

Best wishes,

Paul
