Hi guys

There is a boat with last 4 numbers of HIN K706

What does it mean?
Last 2 digit is model year
Previous 2 digits is the date of manufacture

How can a boat has manufacture year 07 and model year 06? Is it possible?

There is a boat with last 4 numbers of HIN K706

It means that the hull was moulded (or the keel was laid, for non-GRP construction) in Nov 2007 (K being the 11th month), and the model year is 2006.
That's something very unusual - in fact, I've never seen a boat whose model year was older than the construction.
But I guess it's theoretically possible, if the builder kept exactly the same model for both 2006 and 2007.
Though most builders would put 07 (if not 08) as last digits of a K7 built boat regardless of whether the model is really different or not, I reckon.

Nope TGR, commissioning has nothing to see with the VIN.
Boats come out from the builder factory with their VIN already assigned, regardless of when (and even if!) commissioning will take place.

K706 makes no sense.

It means that the hull was made in Nov 2007 but the hull got completed or the model year was 2006?

Some builders don't stick to the standard HIN format.
It could be that the trainee with the HIN stamp sneezed before applying it.

You'd expect a 12 chatacter HIN as per this quote:

Hindecoder.com said:
HIN is a unique serial number used by the boat industry to identify individual boats, crafts, and vessels. In 1972 (November 1st) the format for HIN numbers was not yet standadized in the United States. In fact, there are three formats having a 12-character HIN. The HULL Identification Number cannot contain the letters I (i), O (o), or Q (q).

The Hull Identification Number systems are named Straight Year Format, Model Year Format, and Current Format. The Current Format is somtimes refered to as CIN (craft identification number). It has come into effect August 1st 1984 and is subject to ISO 10087:2006(en).

The HIN is 12 characters long and is composed of multiple sections depending on the format being used. HinDecoder.com has a proprietary technology that enables us to decode the information contained in the HIN or CIN. Commonly, boat manufacturers added additional characters to the HIN but separated from the HIN by a hyphen.

HIN is normally located in several locations on a boat, but the most common places are:

  • On the transom on top of the load waterline. This is sometimes on the upper starboard quadrant.
  • If there is not transom, the HIN can be on the starboard side at the aft end of the hull that bears the rudder or steering device.
  • Boats with more than one hull have their CIN at the outermost starboard near the aft end of the hull.

The numbers have no bearing on the commissioning date which is never indicated in a HIN number

As mentioned in a previous post HIN numbers are added during build and must not be altered later - hence not when sold or commissioned. Changing would mean an attempt to change the vessel ID which, as on cars, is a no-go.
