Can somebody solve a mystery please?
I spent ages lifting the boom out of the mast fitting. As soon as I'd lifted it out, the whole ratchet fitting fell out of the end of the boom. It seems to be plugged / wedged into the boom with nothing to secure it there in the way of screws or whatever. No screw holes, nothing.
Can that be right?

I've never been shipmates with any roller-reefing system, but I wonder if it was originally glued in and the glue has failed? Id oes seem rather dodgy to have no screw holes.
Peter.

'owdo Auntie! :-)

Not being able to see the thing, does it have a sort of tapered square shank that fits into the boom? A bit like an over size file tang?

Charlie.

Yes, that's exactly right.

I did. It broke. (the hammer) I think I'll just leave it alone. It'll probably drop off at a most inopportune moment though.

I have found some information and photos of roller reefing systems in F.B.Cooke's Cruising Hints it is mentioned in a number of his books but unfortunately he does not go in to technical fine detail.
It looks like they are just a good tight fit into the square hole in the boom and end collar of the boom.
the outer end having a second collar with the swivel plate attached by a spike driven into the spar again the end collar having a squire hole to accommodate the spike.

I can see no means of any method of fixing so it must just rely on the end pressures applied by the sail and it's rigging.
I have a Turner Reefing gear for my yacht but I am not at the position of fitting it yet. I will dig it out and give it a good coat of looking at.
Cheers and I hope this helps David.

Aunty is probably gonna send me some pics at the weekend, so I will be able to see just what she's got.

Sorry for cross gendering ya Brett, but if ya gonna be Aunty, you gotta be an old woman! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Mind you, there's a few of them on here! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I don't mind. It was a name I acquired when I was The Lounge's resident agony aunt. I've given that up now as they are all beyond help.

The Lounge Lizzards have always been beyond help! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Try to stay out of there as much as possible, very scary place!

Hi AuntyBrett.
Here is a copy of the page from Cruising Hints. If they match yours then may be Charlie can add some more info for you.
Cheers David.

You've identified it Old Salt, it's the Turner Reefing Gear.
At the mast end of the boom is a tapered mortice into which the gear plugs. It seems as though it's intended to stay in there by friction alone.
Or is there an adhesive I can use to secure it? The reefing gear is made of bronze.
