ok thx for reading i am very new and have manage to get idea of cost of boat and mooring what i want to know is hidden cost of keeping a yacht to live on, you know the sort of things that i may not have taken into account i know nothing at the moment so if you can list every thing that has to be done, i mean i don't even know the cost of shivering my timbers

Be aware of liveaboards that are on a really, really tight budget. They will often pop in for a coffee at about 5:30pm and then hang about until you invite them to stay for dinner.

Hidden costs will be very dependent on the material of the boat. They will also be very dependent on location of berth.

antifoul paint
polish for the superstructure
haul out wash paint and re-launch
insurance
fuel for engine
heating costs
cooking
water heating
ropes/fenders
other maintenance (again very dependent on boat material.

If my neighbours popped in for a coffee at 17.30, I would have a heart attack. They are sitting on my side deck awaiting my return to open the communal fridge for a Sundowner. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

If you are planning to liveaboard and go cruising, then charts and pilots are an expense. If marina bound or wintering then getting the laundry washed and dried is a regular expense.

Ah yes Forbsie, I keep forgetting that you prefer your breakfast, lunch and dinner corked.

ok thx so ball park prices of these?
antifoul paint = ???
polish for the superstructure (take it this is not a tin of turtle wax and a rag?)
haul out wash paint and re-launch bet this vairys a lot but ball park on say a 35 footer?
insurance
fuel for engine guess this is not too bad, will take some cans with me when i do some driving work
heating costs dito if i use derv heating
cooking minro expense
water heating , yes i like my coffee
ropes/fenders
other maintenance , so whats good material. for low cost maintenence?

where is cheapest place to set up base

[/ QUOTE ]At anchor in the Cap Verde Islands, but you won't want to stay there long, because the locals have a nasty habit of borrowing your assets and never returning them. But then on the other hand, the cost of replacement will never exceed the price of a marina berth in the Solent.

lol ok when i said "where is cheapest place to set up base"
i forgot to say in the UK i am not used to sailing folk yet,
i will keep the Cap Verde Islands in mind for the future but after looking it up i am not sure it will have a decent chip shop in walking distance or mooring

its my old chess handle on yahoo there are some very abusive player that pick on the noobs, i used to resign won games to nice people to keep poor ratting and then with the a3xloser name trap these nasty folk into game they can't handle and ruin the chess ratting score, sad i know but you got to do somthing with you time if you don't have a boat lol

If you are looking to keep boat on a swinging mooring then you'll need to factor in the costs of getting to/fro your mooring. You could always row but in my experience, the nearer the shore the more expensive the mooring.

Are you sure you want to be out on a mooring in mid-winter? Sounds romantically isolated but in reality is v. cold unless you have a good heater then you'll have another cost!

Not trying to put you off, just trying to point out the logic of what you are proposing.

thx this is the sort of info i need to look into, so boats don't come with much insolation i take it, it maybe i will take a marina berth for the winter and work to pay for that and extra money for the summer, plans are all very vauge at the moment, which is why i am asking so many questions

Ask away.

Most boats have very little insulation and quickly take the temperature of the surrounding water which during the winter in the UK is going to be around 7 degrees C.

estimate 1 gallon diesel/day for heating, but dont forget that marine diesel is still for the moment cheaper than auto diesel.

If you plan to liveaboard permanently, it quickly becomes darn inconvenient to use a dinghy to/from the boat, and not have access to shore power or water.

In a couple of years or so, you will also have to deal with toilet holding tanks.

I think it was tha Pardy's who said that the best estimate of cost is to look at what you spend living ashore and assume you will spend 60% of that to live on a boat. Seems to me to be a reasonable start and reflects the fact that boats and sailors ar as diverse as houses and thier occupants.

Where in the UK do you want to live? Makes a huge difference.

I wouldn't advise living on a swingong mooring -- makes life too hard unless you are cruising -- go for a marina or such where yopu have electricty, water, laundry nearby and you don't have to row ashore in the thunder and rain on a dark winter's evening.

Mooring costs vary -- in Exeter canal basin it might cost you £80 a month plus electricity -- the solent is more.

In Londopn we pay about £300 a month for a 44 foot sailboat in Poiplar Dock which has all the facilities and is an established liveaboard mooring -- be aware that most places forbid liveaboards, though some tolerate them if you keep yr head down.

We probably spend £800 to £1000 on paint, engine spares and such. cranage probably runs at £200-300 for a lift and hold. If you pay someone else to paint and maintain then costs go up rapidly

Insurance is maybe another £1,000.

Fuekl costs are minimal -- red diesel last we filled was 50p a litre (in Devon the price was 30p!) -- spent about £200 last year -- most was burnt heating the boat.

We cook with parafin -- cost is £15 a year!

Electrcity averages at £25 a month.

I am in the shadow of Canary Wharf -- living next to £1 million flats and pay about £650 a month all in (plus the boat but I owned her already) If I had to pay for teh boat too, it maybe costs £900-1000 a months.

On the plus side there is no council tax as we maintain a seperate address with family (an the marina fees include council rates) and no tv license -- again becuase we have that "proper" address.

I have more space than people paying twice that amount get,, living 40 minutes further out. There is a great community spirit. and it it will be a real wrench when we have to sell up (I have been offered a job in Singapore)

I am not I can live any other way now after doing it for about 4 years.

Once we are out there we will be checking out the liveaboard potential -- bit marinas there look pricey, although boats in the region apepar well-priced compared to Europe.

Good luck -- and probably teh greates t cost is as others suggested socialising Pimms isn't cheap!

Cheers

Nick
