I recently bought an item on e bay and used their recommended payment service paypal. The item was in UK and priced in £. Halfway through the transaction I found a hint that $ were being mentioned but found I could not abort the transaction. I quickly e mailed paypal and they reassured me the transaction was in £. Finally got AMEX statement and it was in $ and then converted back to £. Cost therefore inflated by two currency swaps!

I have complained but they reply all AMEX transactions are automatically converted into $.

To confirm my computer lack of ability how do I attach the red NB attachment to this post . I tried clicking on it but no joy! I now have two problems!!

Its relatively a small amount of money but consider I have been cheated by paypal.

Would anyone advise on my legal position wrt this additional charge. Was I stupid not to expect a UK purchase to only be concluded through using foreign currencies?

I also tried to attach the red NB to this post but couldn't. Now I have two problems!!

Re: Hidden Charges Beware NB

You are probably better asking questions about e-Bay on e-Bay. They are generally very helpful and keen to get problems sorted out.

Have you looked carefully at the item description and then tried to discuss the matter with the seller?

As a buyer have never been charged anything more than the price of the goods. As a seller using Paypal there is a charge for the transfer of cash. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Haven't got a clue about Ebay but the icons are all shown just under the subject line when you are writing a post or reply. Just click the radio button next to the one you want.

This is now an issue with other credit cards. My wife used Visa to book a Best Western hotel room in Spain and both the price quoted and the bill were in Euros. The credit card bill was in pounds, converted by Best Western at (you guessed it) a hotel rate. Apparently, they are now allowed to do that by Visa but in theory only with your permission. After all, your contract with them is agreed in a certain currency and shouldnt be changed without your say so.

But try arguing that with these sharks arsed american internet comapnies. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
