I'm in the UK on an extended vacation, staying for part of the time with friends.

We recently spent two weeks on your wonderful R.Thames and cruised from Oxford to Windsor and back. You guys are so lucky, its all so beautiful especially as you approach Goring past the wildlife park. What scenery.

Ive been directed to this forum by my friends and found it oh so interesting. But there seems so much aggravation with the authorities. What a shame.

I don't own a cruiser as there wouldnt be much point where I live. But I do have a couple of airboats, you know the ones with the big propeller on the back. Only way you can reach some of our territory.

One question, can anyone tell me why some folks on these forums call us US types 'septics'. Not too worried if its not complimentary, just Ive never come across it before and Im curious.

Welcome Mayzee.Rae: glad to hear you've managed to enjoy 'our' River :D

In London you may have heard of rhyming slang:
'apples and pears' =stairs
Ruby Murray = curry etc

Often these rhymes are abbreviated to the first word so....'Going for a few beers and a Ruby'.

'Septic' is a first word abbreviation of Septic Tank.....rhymes with......:D

Welcome and glad you enjoyed our river, the problem with authorities is an English tradition to complain about everything we are very good at it:D

Did you get to go past Runnymede ? That's where our barons and knights revolted against one of our kings about 800 years ago. We have been pretty revolting with authority since then.

Thank you for the warm welcome I got from most of you. I suppose Ive got a bit of a brassneck barging (get the pun, barging!) in here on the strength of a couple of weeks on the R. Thames and I don’t expect you to count the swampland that covers most of the family farm back home as an Inland Waterway! But I aint gonna be around too long.

Watson 1959 Thanks for the explanation. I got a complete rundown from Google once you explained the ‘rhyming slang’ bit. Is it still used to any great extent or is it just ceremonial, like the Pealy Kings and Queens?

Sarabande thank you too. I cant figure out which gender you are but is the ‘sara’ a clue? Yes, we did get to Runnymede and went to see the Magna Carta memorial and the JFK memorial too. It felt pretty strange standing on what is American soil in the middle of England thanks to the generosity of you Brits.
Ive since read up the detailed history on Magna carta

Since enjoying your wonderful river, we’ve been to the city of Bath to see what the Romans left you and to Avebury and Stonehenge. Impressive heritage. Heading South to the coast tomorrow

You're very welcome MR......it's mostly good-natured banter in here but like any community there's always a few with stronger feelings. I've spent 30 years working with/for you fellow countrymen and, like every nationality I've ever known.....you're just like us: a mixed bag :D

DO enjoy the rest of your trip: Britain does have some incredible history so make the most of it.

Remember: we're just two nations separated by a common language :-)
 
Mayzee Rae, I have no problem with Americans at all , the explanation I gave you, at your request, was the explanation given to me by british servicemen, sharing a base with americasns, both of whom were prepaired to die for each other. No malice intended at all.
Out of interest where does the term "limey" come from.
