HHA sensors

Hi East coast forumites,

I am planning to move my boat (Fin keeled 38') from Titchmarsh back to her mooring at Pin Mill next week and have a couple of questions....

1) What's the approach to the walton backwaters like in these present conditions? (NE 5-6 forecast for most of next week)
2) Where is the sensor for the HHA wave height (http://apps.hha.co.uk/mis/Sensors/ApproachHeight.aspx)

Not sure I fancy the trip at the moment but I have to leave Titchmarsh by the end of the month as its a winter berth!

Simple answer is I don't know but I know where this one is - approximately - http://cefasmapping.defra.gov.uk/Map (zoom in) This includes the Felixstowe Waverider which is showing a significant variation to the HHA site at the moment but is 45 minutes old (it updates every hour)

Thats quite a useful site thanks. I must contact HHA and find out where they take their readings. Also what is a bit strange is the shotley wind speed, which over the last couple of days has shown a higher reading than the approach wind sensor. In my experience, it is normally a whole deal quieter going past shotley than out at Languard.

My memory tells me that the Harwich tide gauge is around the end of the main jetty but having the wave height gauge there would not make much sense. In describing it as the Approach Wave Height, I would have thought it would be the same as the Felixstowe Waverider which looks to be around Wadgate Ledge.

A force 5-6 shouldn't stop a 38 ft boat from getting out of the Backwaters. Assuming you are going to take the tide up to Pin Mill, it will be around half-tide as you come out of Stone Point. It will splash a bit on the way to Pye End but there will be plenty of water and no wind-against-tide to make it more uncomfortable. You will need to allow about 3/4 hr from Titchmarsh to Pye End. You can head from the last green buoy to the Harwich breakwater.

I think 45mins may be a little optimistic aginst the tide and a NE 6, however you shouldn't have any problems getting to the Pye marker but you're gonna at the very least get your deck wet.

Agree with that. If you have half the flood under you it's fairly flat across that area and even with a bit of sea you shouldn't have any problems with depth.
