Bought a new battery for my H/Held VHF 6 months ago from seamark nunn chandlery.
Battery has stopped charging, so took it back (with receipt).

They tried another battery in my H/Held and it worked.
They tried the battery I bought in their h/Held and it didnt work.
Conclusion? Faulty battery me thinks.

So instead of offering me a replacement, they try and sell me one, which I decline.
They say that they need to talk to the manufacturer before giving me a replacement.
So, I leave my H/held and dud battery with them & havn't heard anything for days.

What would you do/recommend?

I think you should wait a bit - sending it back to the makers, the makers testing it and reporting back could take a couple of weeks at least. I know this is the retailers problem but they need someone to check that you haven't abused it.

If you are using your boat then they could have lent you one for use in the meantime.

Hi Will
what make is it

Its the Entel HT644.
Anoyingly, the original battery gave up the ghost so either had to buy a new battery (c.£70) or go for a new HH. Decided to go for a new battery!

Go back and point out to them that under the Sale of Goods Act *they*, not the manufacturers, are responsible and that you want a replacement or refund immediately since it is clear that the faulty battery was not fit for purpose

That's the two key points - it is the retailer who is responsible in law and it is a generally accepted precedent that anything which packs up in less than 12 months was by definition not fit for purpose. (generally is not universally and obviously this would not apply to something which could not reasonably be expected to last longer like, for example, an AA battery!)

The retailer can choose to repair, replace or refund (and legally they are allowed a "reasonable" period of time to ascertain if the faulty item can be repaired rather than replaced but in the case of a faulty battery a repair is highly unlikely to be feasible). If they incur costs as a result, it is their problem trying to get the money out of the manufacturer or distributor.

To date, every time a retailer has tried to pull the "it's got to go back to the manufacturers" stunt on me, they've changed their minds when I've stood my ground and hit them over the head with the Sale of Goods Act! I'v also found that if you don't give in to the repair option and stand there politely refusing to give up, they get bored after a while and offer a replacement or refund!

Don't let the b*st*rds grind you down!

The OP IS a Retailer ;)

Somebody told me removing the battery when not used helps stop the self discharge and greatly increases their life.

Don't ask me why, it's either on or off surely?!

I have the same HH and I am not impressed with the user friendliness of it, compared to the Raymarine I had before it. CD instructions...... if the keypad locks itself and I don't have access to a computer.... bit of a problem!

I will pitch for Standard Horizon.
Reasonably priced, robust and work well,, with good batt life.
I have a HX-270E and an HX-280.

My Entel HH has been great - but cant be doing with arguing over batteries.

IMHO, Sea MarkNunn really should have just replaced without causing a fuss. I had the rcpt, I demonstrated the faulty battery. Im unclear why they have made it so difficult. They are a local chandlery and on one hand want to support them but on the other...I think they are taking the piss.

In hindsight, I should have just replaced the HH when the original battery went down - from a 'full scale' chandler (like Foxs) - which is what we will end up doing.

As one of the first to complain about poor sevice, i would add, in fairness to Seamark Nunn that i've had problems with two items purchased from them in the past and they resolved them both very well, with no fuss.

If it's only a few days, i'd suggest giving them a while or maybe calling them.

As for the sale of goods act and "fit for purpose", after six months it's normal to send something back to the manufacturers for checking/fixing/replacing. You're not automatically entitled to a new one, so the supplier cannot just give you one off the shelf. It is his responsibility to deal with it though, which he may be doing.

I've had some major piss taking problems with Fox's electronics dept, Seamark Nunn have always looked after me. Whatever that means :D
