I recently had some new guard rails made up and the swages are hexagonal instead of round.

I've never seen this and just curious if anyone here has. Presumably it's just as strong? The price was right and I was contemplating having new standing rigging made as well.

Cheers,
Nick

The swaged eyes on my standing rigging are hexagonal. At the risk of invoking the late great Professor Sodd they have held the mast for the last 4 years and show no sign of deterioration. The riggers used were well inland and specialised in dangling humans from tower blocks and sundry construction works. I would guess for litigation purposes they may regard the result as stronger or perhaps that is just how the machine works. Visually they are much neater. Price was very competitive. I however, bow to the knowledge of those more experienced in the art of shiny string.

Hi, yes I've had hex swages and they lasted for many years without problem. Its all down to the manufacturer of the swage jaws, if they have been designed to correctly sqeeze the inner wires they'll be as strong as anything. Looking at it from another angle; a round swage could be crap if the jaws/wire/end fitting are not matched. Just cos its round doesn't mean its a good one.

I'd make the judgment by looking at the company who did the swage and less so the swage itself.
