A few lovely photos in this updated blog of a couple sailing around Tasmania, Australia aboard Banyandah, a 38' cutter. In this update they paddled their kayak 8km to Melaleaca then donned rucksacks for a trek to the very remote southern coast.

I read a book a few years ago about some of the places that we dumped our convicts in down under & I think that Macquarie Harbour was described as one of the worst,it sounded appalling!
Those that did'nt conform to the system were literally worked to death. It was the end of the line.

In 1823 a convict station was established on Sarah Island, which is halfway down the then uninhabited Macquarie Harbour. That's on west coast Tasmania, wet, windy, cold. The prisoners sent there were those who re-offended after being sent to the colony. That station logged the much sought "Huon Pine" which only grows in that area and is a excellent timber used in shipbuilding.
We wrote a book about our circumnavigation of Australia that contains much more detail on this, and the story of how the colonists wiped out the Tasmania Aboriginals, herding them up and sending those that survived to a isolated island in Bass Strait. Two's a Crew is available from our website. Follow our signature then /books.
