Went to Herm yesterday for a day trip with a spot of fishing en route.

Forecast NE 4-5 & low tide mid afternoon so decided to anchor and land at Rosaire steps on the SW side of Herm. Anchored just south of the moorings in 15ft onto a lovely sandy gravel seabed, anchor dug in easily and proceeded ashore in the dinghy. Lovely and tranquil with plenty of room for anchoring.

Wandered up to the Mermaid for lunch which was a little disappointing. Food was ok but having to use sign language to communicate was a bit tedious, the staff did understand our signing for knives and forks. The childrens meal came out as something completely different to what we had ordered TWICE but we accepted the second service to keep the peace and avoid further language issues.

Back to the boat before the rain started for a quick cuppa before heading home. The Gsy/Herm ferry was leaving the steps and was not hanging around kicking up a large wake and causing us to rock and roll quite a bit. Lesson for next time - anchor further north closer to the moorings or north of them and be prepared when you see the ferry approaching.

Know that spot well. Going to see if we can get use of the big buoy that was in front of you for a few nights in August. Carrying the tender up the steps so it doesn't wash away is fun.

Must be a local to be charging along at low tide!

Sorry JD if I am trying to teach my grandmother to suck eggs but for people new to the area.

You can anchor quite a long way to the north of where you were just be careful of spring tides when it dries outside the Harbour to Vermerette beacon.

It is a rather purposeful Lochin 40 and he is in deep water.

If you dont know the area, Only go around this with full detailed charts and follow pilotage instructions. Its not too difficult if you are systematic.

Calculate your tidal curve and possibly arrive around high water and then look carefully at low water.

Calculate drying heights of rocks you are passing near and compare with the tidal curve.

Herm is a lovely place on a nice day, good walks and great beaches, pretty quiet during the week, busy in good weather on a sunny week end in summer.

Mermaid pretty average.

Belvoir and Shell beach are stunning on a nice day but work out your tidal curve and use your echo sounder before you anchor to estimate water at low tide if you leave the boat

If you decide to dry out on shell check carefully when tide is dropping there are some nasty isolated boulders on the sand.

Thanks Bandit,

There were a couple of yachts anchored north of the moorings. I also needed to let out 40m of chain to change a shackle and re splice a thimble so did not want to be swinging amongst the moorings.

Shell / Belvoir would of been my preferred anchorage but NE 4-5 and a dinghy with 2 babies and a toddler would not of been much fun.
