What a fascinating man Ian Galletti is and how we enjoyed experiencing his presentation on October 7th.

Now at 80 yrs, he has endless tales to tell of his sailing activities which include several Atlantic crossings in boats that many of

us wouldn't consider safe to go across The Solent in.

A big welcome to those from YBW.com who made it this time.

Don't forget Tom Cunliffe next month. I'll try and give you an early reminder.
see.... http://www.henleyoffshore.org/events.htm#next_event

It will be very full on the night (over 100 each time Tom and Pete Goss last came) and for a 20.00hrs start you'd be advised to

be there before 19.30hrs to ensure getting a seat.

Remember all welcome, so fill a car and bring friends and family.

Nov 11th - Tom Cunliffe:

'Pilot Cutters Under Sail'

Tom Cunliffe has probably sailed more miles aboard original and replica pilot cutters than almost anyone alive. He has owned a real Scandinavian Colin Archer, a 1911 Bristol Channel Pilot Cutter and a modern gaff cutter designed by Nigel Irens in the spirit of the great pilot boats. For nearly forty years he has looked after these boats and in turn they've looked after him while voyaging the Atlantic from Brazil to the Arctic and from the Caribbean to Russia.

Not only is Tom the author of many books on the sea, including historical works on pilot schooners and a definitive text book on gaff rig seamanship, he skippered his own Edwardian pilot cutter for BBC1's Island Race series, presented Discovery Channel’s popular series Boatyard, as well as heading up The Boats that Built Britain, a maritime heritage series on BBC2 TV.

In Tom's own words, he says he will give us a two-part lecture:

•The first will be about the rise and the history of the pilot cutter which, with the possible exception of the clipper ship, is the most charismatic working vessel ever built. Pilot cutters ventured far from their home ports. Their ability to live and sail well in deep water had considerable influence on yacht design. Sailing pilots were colourful characters and their story completes this picture.

•The second part of the lecture is an anecdotal account of his 40-year love affair with these boats, including owning and voyaging in both originals and replicas.

We at HOG know very well from previous experience that "lecture" is a massive understatement - Tom's descriptions might sound a little dry, but his talks are always hugely entertaining as well as informative and full of pragmatic advice.

WHATEVER YOU DO, DON'T MISS THIS MEETING!

It will be very full on the night (over 100 each time Tom and Pete Goss last came) and for a 20.00hrs start you'd be advised to be

there before 19.30hrs to ensure getting a seat.

Hi All
apologies for late reminder.....

2moro..... Monday the 11 of Jan' we have a very special presentation by John Haines.

Cruising the East Coast and Image of Yachts on East Coast

John has sailed the Solent and north coast of France for about three decades, yet has returned to his roots with his yacht - The East Coast.

In 2014, John and his wife decided to satisfy a long standing desire to sample the shallow waters of the East Coast and its rivers.
Following a few weeks in Suffolk they made the decision to base their boat on the River Orwell from the 2015 season.

Many people have asked, “Why go to the East Coast, there’s nothing there?” John’s answer is "They cannot have been there or else they have only passed by at night."

John will describe his personal take on life amongst the sandbanks, wind farms and mud of the East Coast along with the challenges of actually getting there, pilotage, navigation as well as the sights once actually there.

Yes, The Solent is different from the South Coast!

With the company of sea planes and log booms, sea otters and IALA B buoyage making for a very different experience.
