Hempel multicoat - removal.

Last summer I painted the decks of my grp wayfarer in hempel multicoat. I was quite fastidious as to do it as per instructions, however one year on and it looks quite poor.

The paint is very soft and has scratched easily and been worn away with very little use.

I think I know the answer, but I were to re-do it in better quality paint, will it all have to be removed?

Next question would be therefore be what to use for better effect? Toplac? tinted flowcoat?

It's just a cheap play boat, but I'd still prefer it to look fairly smart...

Removing old paints and antifoulings can be easier with Hempel's Paint. Stripper ...... Hempel's MultiCoat may be used as an alternative to Hempel's Primer.

I could be making a mistake but I steer clear of the "name" brands in paint if it is just cosmetic because they turn out to be double the price and they don't perform any better.

I hope their paint stripper performs better than their Multicoat!

I painted the decks on my 28' boat a couple of years with Multicoat and, despite careful preparation, it has not lasted well.

A lot of paint these days is water based and paint strippers don't seem to work well on it. Hot air gun and scraper seem to be effective.

I am a bit nervous about using a hot air gun on GRP but it would certainly save time.

Persil Bio liquid. If you can keep the area soaked in it (and damp) for a few days you might very well be amazed. It's worked on almost everything I've tried it on. Paint on as thick a layer as possible and cover it with cloth also soaked in it. Keep it damp with water mist from a spray bottle/hose. (btw. If it's metal you want the paint off, boil it in 50/50 Persil water).

I tried multicoat on a wooden sailing dinghy, as said soft & does not wear well at all, 6 months outside & it needs redoing as the cover straps have marked & worn it. Using a decent Epifanes next time.

Why would you be nervous? They use fiberglass cowling around motors etc which would get quite warm.

That's true. Perhaps I'd better "try it on an inconspicuous area first"
