I have a 31' boat, new last April. She cruises at 25/30 Knots and has frequent use. In the water (Cornwall) 8 or 9 months of the year. The anti fouling is Hempel Hard Racing. She was lifted and jet washed and the anti fouling looks great.
My question is this. Should a fresh coat be applied every year or is it reasonable to leave it for a second season? Having read a thousand anti fouling threads I feel no wiser on this point. (I am sure that there are other good products, but for simplicity I will stick with the Hempel.)
My second question is the same for the Volvo P outdrive. The grey VP paint has cleaned up beautifully. Just a very little growth left in the joints which I have largely been able to remove. Should I add another coat?

I use Hempel hard racing and it's the same, looks good after a season in the water. I always put a fresh coat on though. Purely because I scrub the water line beard of every month so assume it gets a bit thinner. Also a mid season jet wash and scrub on the under side.
I find the AF works very well, you still get a layer of slime, but no coral worm or barnacles. I tend to mix some copper and zinc oxide into mine too, just for added protection.

I am planning to re coat the Hempel Hard Racing myself this winter. It is in good condition. How severely do I need to abrade it? The data sheet does not help much. Is it a light rub with green Scotchbrite or a severe sanding wet and dry? Any experience? It will of course have had a good jet washing by the marina.

Jet wash, dry and then re coat. I never abraded mine and never had any issues. In fact it stays applied so well and works so well that just one coat is enough each year.

Used to put one coat on every season, but a second coat just around the waterline as we scrubbed it in the water with Scotch pads.
