Hi Guys

Im not sure if this is better placed in the crewing forum but ill start here.

Basically I need your opinions I was doing my Comp crew course a few weeks ago and unfortunatly due to illness in the family had to leave the course on day 3. Now the book is signed of for the excercises but im missing the 4 night hours and about 50 miles.

The company concerned have been good enough to give me half the course fee back. This is where I cant decide what do do. I would rather not have to pay again for half the course as would rather use the money to do my DS. Is there anyway of getting the experience without going back and doing the whole course again?

Unfortunatly I dont know anyone with a sailing boat to ask. I do though have experience on my own 32ft mobo on the river ouse so at least know what the pointy end is called. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

What are you thoughts/sugeestions?

cheers

Karl

it is possible to do competent crew in 3 day + 2 day sessions. perhaps the school you went to would let you sign up for the shorter period if they do them.

Silly question: why were you doing a sail-based course if you own a motorboat? Any qualifications you may acquire further up the ladder won't be any good, in fact you're unlikely to get the miles in. I should know, I've been there, am there - 30 years sailing 2-3000 miles a year, hundreds of Channel crossings, 1000's of night hours, all count for nowt as I target YM in my mobo.

why won't they be any good? Some of us enjoy power and sail, so courses on both sides are useful, and any sort of training usually improves general seamanship and knowledge of the 'other' sides difficulties and issues

Sorry about slow response have beeen working far to hard. My mobo is based on the river Ouse but I want to target Ym as sail for a number of reasons which are

1 Always wanted to sail.
2 There seems to be a lot more oportunity to crew for people.
3 I get the impression sail is dam sight cheaper. On the Ouse your not using much diesel as opposed to the sea where the boats drink it.
