Have just purchased an XM DSC, got hold of the necessary connectors for my Garmin 48, nothing happening. Been out to get some solder to make sure the connection is the best I can get, BUT-- how do I check if the NMEA works between these two?

While I am asking for help can anyone give me a pointer to the articles some months back about what paints can be used to paint names on dodgers? Tried all the search words but no joy!!

Chances are that your garmin is set to talk in garmin's own format. Look through the menu and find Setup where you should be able to set the language to NMEA. There may be more than one version offered so experiment. It's possible there may also be settings on the DSC, it should just be a case of making sure they all talk the same language.

Reality may be not quite that simple as I can attest, having spent ages getting my garmin 128 talking to both Icom and Raytheon.

Can't speak for that radio, but had a similar problem with Garmin and a Navico dsc which I traced eventually to the need for a second live 12v -tve among the wiring harness of the Garmin.

Have checked thru Set Up this shows

Interface
NMEA/NMEA
NMEA 0183 2.0
4800 baud

Alos followed the handbook which lets u specify the formats for connecting external devices whic has six options, NMEA/NMEA being one of those.

XM book just says on GPS "when connected can obtain NMEA info, then just refers to the cables - and + on the cable supplied.

Oh well, just have to plug it in again later , but do wish there was as much help in the paperwork from XM as Garmin show, cos still cannot tie the two in!

This is the one I would play with first, try dropping the version, version 2 is quite new really. Can you get into the radio options, they need to be at the same baud rate, though generally if the baud is wrong the radio will get the first one and miss all the rest as they all start together if that makes sense.

NMEA out (GPS) to NMEA in (VHF)
NMEA gnd to -12v
shield if fitted
