I just did an oil & filter change on leyland thornicroft 345, and went from 40 psi to ZERO! Step 1: I took off the filter and spun the engine; oil shoots out of the pipe under pressure. Step 2; I took off the oil pressure sender unit, spun the engine, and no oil comes out! Can the oil pump have an airlock? any ideas anyone?

Thanks

I'm no engineer, but from my (very) limited knowledge of engines, oil pumps are usually positive displacement and don't get airlocks.

No doubt someone will be along in a minute to give you chapter and verse!

How long did you wait after starting the engine, before stopping it?
As long as its not knocking, give it 30 seconds running with the filter etc on, if its pumping oil to the filter it will reach the rest of the engine eventually- unless the filter is not the correct one.....

If the filter is off, it may well mean that no oil will reach the sender. As Northup says, give it a little time to fill the new filter before the pressure builds up.

Watch out for leaving the old filter oil seal stuck to the engine block so you end up with 2 seals, one on top of the other. My filter is completely out of sight round the side of the engine & I ended up with 2 seals. Everything was fine under several tests - until I was out of the harbour in a strong tide & gave the engine its head. The extra heat softened the unsupported extra seal & the extra pressure pushed it out of place. All my oil ended up in the bilge! Thanks to the crew of the Moody "Detente" who kindly helped me out.

Thanks- I did put the filter back on before testing to see if oil came out of sender hole. the old filter I took off was different to the new one, in shape and number, but Leyland Daf dealer assures me the new one is the current equivalent! Any thoughts on how I could check the oil is getting through the filter?

Thanks-I understand priming the filter (ie filling it with oil before screwing it on), but how do I prime the oil pump?
