Any expert navigators out there prepared to help a bit of a dimwit?

I did my day-skipper theory years ago (10 years +) and tried to do the YM theory last winter. however, I started the course late, didn't have time to do any homework, and I found it way too hard. I have forgotten more than I ever even knew. I am going to enrol again this winter and have been promising myself a revision of DS over the summer.

I wondered if there was anyone out there who would be happy to spend a day with me at home (mine or yours) or aboard (mine or yours) going over some of the DS exercises and helping me get back up to speed before the Autumn term starts.

I am happy to pay for it (within reason!) as my next step is to hire a trainer to help me anyway.

I'm in Dartford, boat on the Medway - happy to travel up to 90mins by car for a day.

Any kindly old seadogs want to take me on?

plenty of experts here - even some qualified ones!:)

I passed YM shorebased some years ago but wouldn't trust myself to try and teach it (bit like driving!)

Where are you taking the course? Most RYA teaching establishments will be happy to spend the extra time with students who are a bit rusty.

Haven't decided yet for this year. Last year I did it at the National Sea Training Centre at Gravesend. Very good course and good instructor, but I was just too rusty, unprepared and couldn't give it enough time. Missing the first 4 weeks didn't help either!

One other suggestion is that you post any questions/confusions on here as well.... there is an enormous font of knowledge, and the ECF is one place where you can be certain that you will receive a decent, supportive reply.

It is well worth remembering that we've all been there, and no question is too daft, simple or obvious that it isn't worth asking....

Often in the past when posters have asked what might appear to them to be a 'simple' question, there has been a deluge of subsequent posts from others saying "thanks for asking.... I wondered the same, but wasn't brave enough to ask!"

Agree and....

Let us know what you had trouble with and maybe we could point you towards some web resources.

What charts were used on the course? I have heard of trouble with training charts 3 and 4 due to the shifting time zones between Northern and Southern continents confusing students.

Weather is esier now, when I took mine, 'now and later' synoptic charts had to be produced from a shipping forcast and I was made to practice.

This was on a correspondence course, sending exercises in every week. As this was all in my own time and being on shift work it really worked well for me. Now my old school operates an Email system so problems can be sorted out easily, though it only used to take 3 days anyway (P.O. willing). Might suit you.

Lastly how many weeks was the course? I assume it was once a week. (But we all know how assume breaks down).

Dave.
