I have a 2.3hp (2 stroke) outboard which I believe, having researched the internet, is probably a Johnson but I cant align any of the numbers of the engine with those on the various outboard websites.

On the engine is says HJ2RESS followed by OMC followed by H8514116.

Its got some main bearing noise and I want to buy the right manual and give it a full rebuild so need to identify the engine first.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Chris

It is a Johnson, made by OMC. Johnson outboards ceased production in 1997 when OMC ceased trading as the Outboard Motor Corporation and, basically, continued being produced as Suzukis.
From 1997, BRP continued making Evinrude to this day, which were the same company as Johnson back in the day.

Your model # HJ2RESS means (AFAICT) H = Made for the Hong Kong market, J = Johnson, R = Rope start, E+S = 1990, S = ignore. (may mean 'special')

(Note: I.N.T.R.O.D.U.C.E.S. is the date code word for Johnson. Where I = 1, N = 2, and so on)

Stand to be corrected, of course.

HJ2RESS is the all important model number

H= made in Hong Kong

J= Johnson ( E = Evinrude)

2 = 2hp (or 2.3)

R = rope start

ES = 1990

final S is a production suffix

It's an odd one though. I cannot find it in any of the usual lists

I have an engine Evinrude model HX14RSP serial: H1845370 for about 40 years. Where to find a parts manual and where to find similar parts? Thank you so much.

It appears to be a 1988 commercial model

Cannot help much . Maybe basically the same as the recreational model, maybe a downrated version of a more powerful model ?????

Contact your nearest Evinrude dealer for advice
