Hi guys,

I am hoping one of you clever lot can offer me advice on gas rams, struts, hydraulic arms etc. to help with the lowering and raising of a forward facing arch. (Pic attached) I have already put hinges in place albeit temporary as I am getting some manufactured to the profile of the arch.

My problem is i have to hinge it back and it needs two guys to be able to lift to a position to where one guy can hold in place, whilst the other 'promptly' goes to the back to hold so both then can then lower it, then same to get it back.

I have seen stuff that lowers and raises arches that hinge the same way they are facing but not a lot for this, apart from a 'very expensive looking' broom push button device that fits inside the arch.

As anybody on the forum done this DIY or is it specialist time.

Thank you in advance.

Regards
Kev

you can use one of these but with white webbing and stainless obviously.

just on one side which is out the way, have a white material cover made when not in use or just take it off when not needed.

one bolt holds it.

it fits between your speaker and your upright stainless windscreen trim.
the strap is attached to the top corner of the new cut. just one bolt. not too tight as they need to rotate a little.

I used mine on my corniche for 5 years .

every time I went out and back in, hundreds of lifts, single handed while on the move down a narrow canal and in harbours such as whitby, never a problem.

I had stainless plates that bolted on for rough seawork, one on each side, two bolts on each.

I guess you want hydraulic control?
You could use a mercruiser or Volvo sterndrive pump & two small hydraulic rams inside the arch there are often pumps on ebay & the mercruiser ones come with the relays built on
there are hundreds of different rams of different sizes available from hydraulic outlets I've used flowfit who advertise on ebay & they do rams & hoses & fittings etc obviously you will need to make up suitable brackets to mount whatever you use

Thank you for taking the time to reply guys, great idea daka but ken is right, hydraulic is the preferred option or gas struts positioned correctly to help with both directions and to avoid gravity taking over!!
from the scribbled on pic, I can get it from position B to A easily on my own but gravity takes over with A to C, it takes 2 guys from C to A and 2 from A to B ( only because cables need feeding back into arch as it goes down, but hopefully Swmbo could manage that one ) i was hoping to find a gas strut which could be stowed away and used/bolted on when needed. i.e loosely fitted somewhere like on 2nd pic??? However, Apparently there is a hydraulic supplier near me so will try them for advice for that route, it'd be great for a posh push button set up!!!!

Thanks again.

if you mounted the rams inside the arch roughly where you have the x-x at the front then as the ram extended that should give the movement you want

obviously you would need substantial mounts inside the arch probably stainless brackets bolted or glassed in it depends on the access you can get but the hoses could run inside the arch from below then the whole system would be unseen

you would need to be sure the bottom of the arch was strong enough to take the strain of the rams & maybe use the rams in series so they move in unison
