Help wiring ammeter from hydrogenerator please

Am having a dizzy moment, so help please.

Am wiring an ammeter between a hydrogenerator and the battery.


Do I put the ammeter through the positive ( red) or black ( negative)?

I assumed that if it were a digital one, he'd probably have the instructions.
