So, after protracted negotiations I persuade the missus to spend new years eve afloat on Alexandros. On a pontoon so not much to go wrong. After a good drink/dance at the clubhouse we retired to the boat at around 2am. Missus wanted to use heads, so after instructions re. amount of paper to be used off she goes. Well the stupid toilet decided to mutiny. It would not pump away anything. A gasket popped out of somewhere and water all over the floor, not nice at all.

Why oh why did it have to choose last night to commit suicide? Anyone else would have seen the funny side of it, but I am afraid the missus just went a bit quiet, never a good sign.

So, the toilet needs a service or replacement. But what toilet do I have? There is no makers name that I can find and I wondered if anyone can recognise it for me.

Any help most appreciated as always. Oh, and happy new year to you all.

Steve

PS, the boat is a 1980 Westerly 21 if that is any help, I suspect the toilet is original equipment.

Not 100% sure but I think that it is an old RM69. In any case, they are pretty standard and I would simply try to replace the entire pump unit, retaining the porcelain bowl. Much more cost effective than buying individual parts and then having to replace others after a while. Good luck.

Toilet exploded

Happy New Toilet 2012!

Seriously it looks like an RM69 or a Chinese copy of same.
From what part of the toilet is the water coming?
sometimes the flush pipe becomes dislodged from the rear (!) grommet.

Possibly the most affordable item on a boat, much cheaper than say a winch, and it seems to keep everybody happy except the skipper who invariably gets the job of repairing it!

Hope you get to the bottom of it!

Sorry should have added:

RM69 is made by Raske and Van der Meyde in the Nederlands.
Most chandlers have bits, otherwise the factory whilst complaining that it is not a shop, may send you bits if approached in a most polite manner.

If it turns out to be this make of course!

Thanks all. The water seems to be coming from all over the place to be honest. Certainly from the pump area. After a few too many and a rather nice scotch I did not feel like investigating too far last night. However, the water that soaked the carpets was not smelly, so I think (hope) it was sea water. Will get down to the boat tomorrow for further investigations. I seems a repair kit is about £40 and a new toilet can be had for as little as £89, although not a Blakes/Lavac i hasten to add.

Any further info on a positive ID very welcome.

Remove it, close off those holes in the hull ( and do that properly next time the boat is ashore ) and fit a PortaPotti, they have their own holding tank which seems will be a legal requirement soon...

I know a lot of people here seem to love their Lavacs, but the previous owner of my boat originally had Lavacs installed and felt strongly enough about them to have them taken out after just two years from new to replace them with Jabscos.

If the finances will run to it seriously consider a Lavac. You wont look back.
BUT
You need to be able to run the inlet and outlet hoses as indicated in the manual and you have the space for a fairly large bulkhead mounted pump.

Thanks, I am sure you are right Vics but the heads compartment on a W21 is tiny. Coat off to fit in it! Also I really can not afford £££'s for the loo, or anything else at the moment! Will remove the old one today, old clothes job I reckon.

If you've got that thing in now (I think RM69 is probably correct) then a Jabsco would probably fit, the two types look almost the same, though, as it is a W21, you may need the compact version. The dimensions are on the Jabsco web site here.

I had a W21 with an SL400 fitted and didn't think anything else would go in the space. Looks like I was wrong! I think the SL400 was the original, as it was on a lot of other Westerlys
