Hi

Im new to the forum so firstly let me say hello.:)

Now for the help required bit.

I am looking to spend around the £25K mark & wandering what would be the best used motor boat to look for, my ideal requirements would be a diesel powered boat with good sea keeping capabilities & comfortable enough for a weekend possible week away cruising.

I live in Liverpool & when I have enough experience I am looking to cruise up to Scotland, down the Welsh Coast & possibly crossing over to the Isle of man.

Any advise would be gratefully appreciated so please be gentle.;)

Thanks in advance.

Princess 33 on twin shafts would be good start but preferably not the one with the weedy 80HP engines.130 hp version would be adequate for most purposes in the price range.

Not very good with a spanner & sockets & to be honest my time off work is at a premium so I would rather be cruising & not tinkering to much.

I am looking to go out with the wife & 3 teenage children & possibley a couple of weekends away with friends so something to accomodate 5 people at a time.

Thanks for the advice & hello's so far.Feeling very welcome already. :)

Tony, in your price range to buy a boat in good condition, that doesn't need a lot of attention, you are talking about a 25-27 foot sports cruiser, probably American built and with a big V8 petrol engine. Probably a Rinker, Bayliner, Regal, Sea Ray etc. These will be up to 10 years old. They will sleep 4, 2 on converted dinette, 2 in a double mid berth cabin. Great for a weekend, but a bit snug for much more. You may be lucky a get a Glastron 269/289 with a Diesel engine, but this is likely to cost £30 k ish.

To get a boat with more accommodation, in this price range, you are talking a fair bit older, which will require some TLC.

Check gumtree and also include Ireland and Northern Ireland in your search as many boats here are usually sold across the water. Demand here is far less so prices could be better, I sold mine a few months back and had it advertised for 5 3 days , had 5 callers all from Scotland and England and the Scot bought her.

What about a sealine.

Just making you aware to explore all options and as you are currently doing, research the options. Good luck with your search. I am sure you will be pointed in the right direction

Hi Tonx and welcome to a great forum. If you are looking at a Bayliner, Neale of this parish is a Bayliner expert. He will be able to tell you everything about the one you are looking at - and others.

Questions about crew numbers may be a bit academic as all of them will be left standing on the shore to make room for the large number of 25L jerry cans full of petrol which will be occupying the cabin/lazerette/bog/bedrooms and cockpit.
The art of filling up your boat with 50 gallons from petrol cans in a nice swell is also one worth mastering a bit sharpish. :):):)

Colvic cleopatra, 33' has an aft cabin version, lots of room, twin diesels and large tanks, good sea boat if it kicks up a bit. older ones are still very usable without huge expense, friend just bought one advertised for £31000 and had offer of £21000 accepted. replaced some headlining and had aft cabin windows re-furbished, less than 5k. :)

Hi Tonx and Welcome
In answer to the four 'bits' I have extracted from your original Post

If your are anything like the rest of us I bet the 25K might be stretched to 30ish once you start looking in earnest:rolleyes:;)
Playing about in the Irish Sea I reckon a semi displacement vessel is ideal
The nature of the beast is that it is rarely like a mill pond!
Sports boats are fine but the days when conditions are spot on for a planing hull can be quite spaced apart!
Based in Liverpool it is very tempting to keep a boat in the Mersey for obvious reasons
You mention the Welsh Coast and other areas too I notice.
Well, yep, loads of sports boats are kept and used in North Wales it's a great place to play.
When you find your boat where were you thinking of berthing initially?
I ask because it might make a difference as to what might be most suitable
The areas you mention have been my boating playground for more years than I care to remember so any advice in that direction feel free to ask
You ask the question ref fuel type
Snag is with petrol, there are few places with access to the stuff in marinas and harbours, whereas diesel is most readily available waterside.
Running costs vis a ve the two?
Well, the average no. of hours a typical leisure user does per annum is about 50 the 'Industry' tells us so in boaty costs it's not the big deal most peeps think
Let's say you do 40 hours season 1
Petrol vessel-- at a guess- 10 galls an hour
Diesel vessel-- at a guess- 7 galls an hour
Not that much in it!
Petrol/Diesel cost? well petrol at Marinas etc (if you find any) probably at a 'premium' anyway

My choice would be a shaft drive diesel with a roof
'Roof'? you ask
'Yeh' I reply
'Why' says you
'Cos I hate faffing with canvass and most the time it's gonna piss down':D
Shaft drive for ease of maitenance
You mention you aint exactly enamoured with muckin about with spanners etc
Therefore you will need to get A Man to fettle the outdrive/drives on a sports boat.
Outdrives are fine but DO need regular maintenance.

Yep, I here the cries
'Where's Tonx gonna get a shaft drive diesel semi displacement vessel that aint too old and big enough to take all the Family etc you wassock for 25K yer plonker'!

'I dhunno' I replies in advance 'just athought, there could be sumatt out there innit'!:p

Tonx
If yer wanna come over to our bit of North Wales sometime and take a look at boats or have a look at the Menai Strait etc etc
Gis a shout, bring the Family we can get you out on the Water for look at the Area and talk boats and bollix, the latter we are experts at
:D

Guys

Again thanks for the advice regarding my initial enquiry, i would like to tell you a little bit about myself.

I have been part of the LYC dinghy sailing section for the best part of the last year & take sailing lessons on a weekly basis & am RYA level 1 sailing certified, I recently also took my RYA level 2 powerboat with coastal endorsement & RYA VHF operators quals & im hooked.

I now take lessons in a RIB which helps to keep some of the skills obtained up to scratch (ie coming along side, MOB & manouvering in confined spaces) & am currently in the middle of doing my Day skipper theory online.

Many years ago i used to own a jetski & loved the thrill & excitement & speed of the ride. I now have 3 teenage children & a wife so that is no longer an option & also a bit selfish.

So going down the power boat avenue really appeals to me & to be really honest most of the time we wont always be on board together, due to our work & social commitments.

Therefore i have started to look down the sports cruiser direction, here are a few examples i have looked at (this list is not exhaustive) & any advice or critiscism would be gratefully appreciated.

1. Bayliner 2855 Ciera
2. Sunseeker Portofino 31
3. Searay Sundancer
4. Monterey 265
5. Sealine 270 Senator
6. Beneteau Flyer 8

Thanks in advance
