probably need much more info.

is that a new winch?
if old, anyone checked it and cleaned motor, replaced the_black_things_I_dont_remember_how_they're_called_in_english
gauge of wire feeding them?
length of said wires?
fuse large enough, guess not tripping
battery capacity?

cheers

I'd guess at gauge of wire too.

winch

black things english /brushes

yep all seems ok all new wire feeds ect
just dont know enough about them
????????

yep, that's it brushes! :D

there's a need to get a lot of current through the wires to have the power to lift your anchor or whatever.
Now, a thin gauge wire and/or a long length of them from source (battery) to windlass means that the effort to lift the chain translates to simply heated wires.

Can you measure the length of the cable and the thickness of it?
FWIW, on my 43ft mobo, the 1000W 24V windlass has around 9m cables run to it and are almost 10mm in dia.
BTW, you are sure that windlass is same voltage as boat? ie. 24V windlass on a 12V circuit wont work...

winch

no more than 3mtres
black earth side double wire soldered in proper terminal
around 4/5m thick
live feed same single
wires are of same or thicker than
the wires going into windings
also believe to be 12 volt as stamped under side

the load that is on it when tried

odd, how about trying with just the battery and cables, bypassing the control box and buttons?
I know not a nice solution, but at least rules out control box problems.

If that's fine, I'd question the battery condition! What battery capacity, how old, how well charged, how do you know it's charged?
Since it's in the hard, I'd be tempted to bring the car over and with the car engine running, try the test again with the car battery giving the current ;)

cheers
