HELP REQ\'D Live- Aboard and Marinas in the med

Hello,
I am a fairly novice sailor (2 years) and hope to take 6 months off work and live aboard and sail around the med. Plan is to rent out our flat and buy/charter a boat (40'ish). Charter prices tend to be fairly high for charter (15-25k Euros for a 1-3 year old boat) and on the face of it it seems it may be a better option to buy a boat. I just saw a Jenneau Sun Odyssea 40 2003 for GBP88k VAT inc. I would need to sell the boat after the trip to go back to work. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif I understand it will cost about 5% to sell but thought it would be prudent to assume i can't sell it for 6-12 months and therefore need to know how much I should reckon on the marina costs etc costing. Can anyone give me any advice on this. I would really appreicate any thoughts on this. Thanks. Mike

You will also lose money on the modern boat by virtue of depreciation. If you choose one 5 to 10 years old depreciation can be ignored and wear and tear will be your burden. I would allow 10% of the value to cover your broker and other selling costs. Get the VAT position clarified and don't spend too long in Spain if you want to keep your costs down.

But others will know better than I.

Do you really nead a 40ft boat and so new? It seems a huge expence for just 6 months. We have spent the last two years in the Med on a 1968 29ft Contest, she inially cost us £11,000 and we are having a fantastic time. We have met people who have spent much more than us on having the perfect boat!, but then they often end up spending most of their time worrying about money and the lack of it. My advice would be to look at something slightly smaller and a bit older. A lot of the boats built in the 70's-80's (Moody 35, Westerly Conway etc)are far stronger than an almost new Jenneau or Bavaria and may be better equiped. You never know you might be able to have 18months off work instead.

Although a bit bigger than I had initially wanted, I found my boat for 30k US. The folks near me in Mexico have a lovely old wooden one that cost them 25kUS. When I started looking for boats, I was put off by the new ones. Not just their prices, but also the fact that you can often see daylight through the deck!
You can't beat an older boat for value for money and workmanship. Or maybe you can. I'm just prejudiced!

i have a 37' steel boat (1975) in perfect condition, freshly professionaly painted (hull - underwater and top side) and engine serviced, laying in greece
it is open layout and ideal for a couple

Hi Mike,
Marina costs will vary considerably on location, facilities, and the time of the year.
If you can be more specific on any of the above - I suspect others will be able to provide answers.

Hi, a 40 foot on trhe south coast of Spain will cost you from 33E per day during the summer period (summer end 31/10).

Winter is difficult to find a berth.
