Hello,

I have an ancient Shipmate RS8300 VHF with 2 handsets. Port #1 works fine, but the #2 output of the main unit is not working. I purchased another set on ebay, thinking I could make something work using the combined parts. The second unit has the same problem -- Port #2 does not work. Am I missing something simple? Do I need to program the system to recognize the 2nd handset? There is nothing in the user manual. Any suggestions or help would be appreciated...(Yes, I know I could get a new system, but I'd like to avoid a new long cable run if there is a simple fix to the existing system.)

Many thanks in advance.
GB

I have the rs8400 and only one handset but it works in either socket with no programming required, I will be on the lookout for a second handset at beaulieu. just a shot in the dark but could the diference between the rs 8300 and 8400 be that the former only accepts one handset? I certainly cant see any other obvious difference? im sure somebody who knows more will be along soon....

I also picked up a seperate dsc controller for these radios but theres a problem with the lcd screen so its not much use sadly.

The answer is simple; the RS8300 only works with one handset. If you want 2 handsets, you need the RS8400 version. This is explained in the user manual.

Thank you both for your comments. I see from your link to the manual for RS8300/RS8400 that dual output is not (no longer?) standard on the RS8300. Curiously, however, both handsets used to work on my RS8300 and the "non standard" comment on the identical diagram in my RS8300 only manual does not appear. I will do some more digging! GB

I only ever had one handset with my 8100 but the wiring was three for 2 when I bought the boat and the manual says it can be used with two with the caveat:
"While one handset is in use, the second one will display the legend OCC. However, handset No. 1 will always override handset No. 2"
No mention of having to program to identify #1 vs #2 and I always assumed it was based on port plugged into. Diagrams for that (presumably earlier) model don't mention dual station being non-standard. Oh and I have an 8100 (with one handset) for sale if anyone's interested...

Hello. I broke my RS8300 handset and it appears you have 2. Is there any chance you might like to sell one. Please PM me if you still have it. Regards, Kevin.
