Hi.I have been given a boat and am new to the sport.Does anyone know the make/model or the type of waters it could deal with? I also need a guess on the weight so i can get a trailer and what size/ type.
It is 17.5 ft (5.4m),fiberglass, catamaran type with SEALORD on the side and a 50hp outboard. The package is at least 14 years old and has not moved for years but appears structurally sound.
thanks to all
Mick

A Seahog very poplar on the fishing front, dare I say try a few sea fishing sites?

It's a sealord, made by SeaHog http://seahog.co.uk/Sealord.htm

Good basic boat. Many made. The hull is a clone/copy of a hull that was used in boats like the Pilot 17, Wilson Flyer, Mariner 17, Nab 17, etc. It's a good hull and I've had 2 of them. Perfectly fine for coastal use, within a few miles of land (with competent skipper). 50hp is small - the makers generally said 85hp max and 70 was recommended. I have run it with 90 and 125hp and it's fine, esp with 125hp :-)

Weight excluding any engine fuel gear is about 500-600kg and a 50hp engine is say 110kg, so whole rig will be 850kg or so

The hull type is known as "dory" or "cathedral hull", not "catamaran

Good luck

Hi Jfm,

Suggest you check the condition of the transom and cockpit deck before you start spending any real cash.

Check the transom by tapping with a coin and listen for a dull sound, it may indicate the ply inside has rotted, this is not uncommon and mostly due to poor sealing on holes drilled to mount gear on the transom.

Check the coackpit deck for soft or bendy areas, some builders did not do a good job of sealing the underside and it rots.

She looks like a nice starter boat, just take care not to spend too much money as you will not recover it with older boats, though this is a better hull shape than most.

JFM and Richard are spot on its a Seahog Sealord

I had a Pilot 17 that is very similar to your new to you boat. I had a 50hp evinrude on mine and it went ok with two up and gear. This type of boat was loved by anglers because they are a stable fishing platform although if driven hard can be unkind to your back.

Take advice from fellow users, get some experience either on a course or with fellow boaters but most of all stay safe and enjoy your boating.

Martin

thanks

Thanks guys for the info. Sealord produces alot of google hits but seahog narrowed things down alot. Im now searching for a used trailer (lots more hits) and am looking for 850kg+ on Jfm's advice. I assume a braked trailer is better for boat towing or is it?
regards.
