I posted last week about no water coming out when I removed the drain plug on the side of my VP 2002, as suggested I gave it a good poke but still no water. Thinking it may have been already dry I removed the thermostat and poured water in. The water jacket around the cylinder head filled up but did not drain. Is water meant to flow down the hole in the centre of the picture?

No! It's were the body of thermostat sits. Water flows through the outer ring area. Don't worry, I had the same concern when I replaced a thermostat a few years ago in my 2002. As for the water not draining out of the drain plug I'm afraid I can't help. If the motor is not overheating and there is plenty of water through the exhaust then things should be ok. Try filling the cooling system with a scale remover (I've used washing soda in the past) and try later.
If you remove the bypass pipe at the rear of the block that goes to the exhaust manifold most of the water should drain from the head area.

Thanks very much, you have saved me a lot of time and maybe money. If I didn't get a reply I was going to book an engineer for Friday. I already have the block filled with descaler, going to flush it out tomorrow.
