Can anyone tell me what Adhesive to use for the External Rubber fairing seal on a Volvo 120S saildrive leg. Mine is peeling away at the edge, It looks like normal Contact adhesive but do Volvo recomend something special

Sikaflex have a product for submerged use. Not cheap but it certainly works for me. Can't remember the product reference number off the top of my head but a decent chandler will be able to guide you.
Normal contact adhesive: No chance.

No special adhesive recommended by VP, as much depends on the material the hull is made of. I used to use Bostik, and 90% of results depend on surface preparation an application and drying procedures.
Cheers

I just lightly roughed the gel coat under the seal and the top side of the seal with some wet and dry and used a two part epoxy. I think it was Plastic Padding but Araldite would be the same. It has survived 6 years including pressure washing so must be OK. The difficult bit is holding it in place until the epoxy sets - much quicker on a hot day!

You probably know that you don't need to seal around the saildrive leg as the outer rubber diaphragm is not intended to be waterproof - in fact there is a hole in it to let water drain out when ashore. I have seem some boats with loads of sealant in this area which is a complete waste of time.

I've just done mine and the Volvo guy (where I bought the seal) considered Evo-stick contact adhesive to be as good as any. As said earlier, the prep is the most important part, good clean surface on the hull, slightly abrade the rubber seal with sandpaper before applying adhesive. All the above IMHO!!

You should use a two part waterproof contact adhesive. Its not cheap but its better than having the fairing seal wrapped around your prop or cutter etc. Believe me it pays.

IMHO the majority are correct.
Any regular contact adhesive is fine provided the surfaces are well abraded beforehand and both surfaces near touch dry before you finally press them together - it is what we use.
A two part epoxy glue would possibly hold better - but a bugger to apply and hold in place - and harder to remove also.
The waterproof sikflex is possibly ultimate glue - but you'll need a grenade to ever get it off!

Evostik Serious Stuff.

Fantastic for me but don't let it go off on anything you want to clean!

Claims;-
Fast setting - High initial grab
* Sticks almost everything to anything
* Bonds to wet surfaces
* Permanent flexible bond that means you won’t need screws, bolts or rivets
* Waterproof - Interior & Exterior
* Heat resistant from -40oC to +100oC

No connection;- just impressed.

I used "Mitre Fast" superglue, this has a spray on activator that you apply to one surface and a compatable superglue that you apply to the other surface. Available from Screwfix at about £7.99 IIRC, enough to do 2 saildrives with plenty left over.

As said above surface preparation is most important whatever glue you use. Ours have stayed on for 12 months so far with no sign of any detatchment. You need to be careful about the positioning but it is a bit more forgiving than contact adhesive, yet it dries in about 10 secs so no problems keeping it in place. A small solid wallpaper seam roller is very good for ensuring proper adhesion all over, particularly the edges.

I finished off with a bead of sikaflex around the edge of the gasket, smoothed off, to hide any edges that might start the gasket to peel off.
