I am new to motor boat and is checking out a Wellcraft 2600 Prima. It was made in 1990 and with only ONE motor (Mercruise, 340 HP, 450 engine hr). Should I worry about the reliablity of one motor? So far this boat has been in the fresh water, but I will bring it to the Hudson river and Jersey shore.

Thanks for any suggestions and opinions!!

Welcome to the forum.

I guess it depends on the consequences of the engine failing. Is it possible for you to carry and deploy some kind of auxillary engine in case the main one fails?

Re: Yo there!

Yo! With those liteweight hi-lift cams and big-bore Holleys the Wellcraft baby should really fly - and how! Should you worry about there being jus' the one motor? That's a big uh-huh - No way! Not when it's a motor like this one! The all-up speed says Goooooood Byeee to those slowboat blues - and tops at faster than a scalded crittur at a er um erm i can't keep this up.

Amnyway, i do hope your new boat will be very nice. Your car has only engine and most do ok.

Don't worry about one engine. If you are only going to use the boat close to shore and you have a problem, BoatUS or SeaTow are never far away. Make sure you take out towing insurance. $97/year with BoatUS covers any tow you require.
-have the boat surveyed
-if the boat has not yet been in salt water, have a fresh water cooling system installed before you put into the Atlantic. It's not essential, but is better for the engine and is also easier to winterize.
-have the hull painted with antifoul
-make sure you have zinc anodes installed in the right places
-take some basic lessons with the US Coast Guard or local Power Squadron - this will also get you a discount on your insurance.
Good luck

(she is a good catch)... ok enough sucking up.. thanks for your replies, they have been helpful, insightful and well received. BTW, you Guys from the UK are fine in my book, I just want to mix it up with the Frenchies..

Mobo Dome

No I think we should have a Mobo version of the Thunderdome - "two men enter, one man leaves" no holds barred type of solution to forumite disputes from here on in!!!!!!!!

Re: wow

hi, Arthur

The question posed by pchen was no problem. But "dfix" whacked into hlb quite appallingly (and that post really has gone) so more than one of us said the equivalent of steady on. Then dfix came back heftily, and the thing got kimmerised. Then, he came back again! So i told im to clear off, thinking the whole thread wd be gorn soon.

But some of these posts are remain, strangley hidden, seeable but only round the back of the forum. in fact it may be now that the ones that remain are the (fine) starter posts and erm one or two of me telling someone to clear off!

So i am not that bad, honest. And have most certainly been slapped a bit, and kimmerised plenty.
