It would be useful to forum readers if you put the subject of the post in the title bar, such as

"Teleflex steering cable rating - advice please" You would then get a better, more focused, response.

Re: Help needed please

The answer must be NO!

If you did not know the respective engine power and cable rating and you fitted it in ignorance then it may well physically work but to do so knowing and in the result of failure?

The speed of the boat could also be a factor ie you are more likely to find

Re: Help needed please

My ooutboard is 60hp the teflex cable is rated up to 55hp it’s only 5hp difference ? not like it’s a lot more i would have thought there would be some kind of tolerance on the 55hp cable and not 55hp and that’s it ?

The rated cable should work well on your engine, but I would be more concerned if it has the correct cable ends/ connection, fitting on the engine and steering wheel...

If you're looking for someone to tell you it will definitely be OK to put an under rated steering cable on an over rated outboard then I think you'll struggle. No one in their right mind is going to tell you it will definitely be Ok.

Re: Help needed please

Ok I will take another bite
Teleflex have been making steering cables in the uk for about 70 years and have produced several versions .
Earliest cables were known as C*** or D*** depending on core diameter with the D offering 9 & 12 inch strokes C only 9”
Outboard engines used 9” and all had a end tube with ridges that fitted into split ball to allow a swivel fitting and a threaded rod end .
The next development was what was through tube fitting in which an industry standard tube was used where outboards swivelled upon tilting out of the water and the cable end went through this tube and was secured with a trapped nut and a drag link connected to the tiller arm . This is the type of attachment used on all push pull cables now. However lighter cables were produced with lower breaking loads and reduced manufacturing costs which is what you may be looking at.
Are you looking at a complete steering system or just a replacement cable because you can’t use a C cable in a D helm and vies versa.
The upper rating for light or economy is 55hp and is there aa a guide to suitability for your and everyone else to follow disregard at your peril
Remember a cable breaking can and does cause fatalities!
