Help needed re new roller reefing.....

I have to replace the forestay and roller reefing system, and have decided to use a Profurl system.

The mechanism currently on the boat is an old French design; the old and rather stretched forestay being an integral part of the system itself. This makes measuring the stay length precisely very difficult. Short of sending a rigger to the boat, how do I go about this project…..?

Does the new forestay get made and fitted independently of the Profurl system? Can I simply provide a rigging company the measurement between the eyes of deck fitting and masthead fitting? Seems a little err….. vague to me.

As you can see, i'm not disparately knowledgeable in these matters, so I’d very much appreciate any suggestions and advice. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I had a Profurl for a boat before and fitted it myself ...

To find the length - I used the genny halyard and a builders measuring tape.

The Profurl was able to be slid onto the forstay from bottom end ...

But seeing as you are replacing the stay .. surely then the mast will be taken down for this ? Or a "cherry-picker" platform used to get you up there ...

The mast doesn't need to come down. I have an inner forestay AND a spare forestay!

[/ QUOTE ] Yes, that would be the correct measurement for the new forestay + toggle.

The Profurl goes outside the forestay, and the "long link plates" allow you to choose how far off the deck you want the drum to sit. Once you have that decided, you can assemble the Profurl around the new forestay, to determine the final length of foil you'll need.

I assume you have the Profurl instructions which will give you the lengths of all the Profurl bits.

I went through this last year, replacing a Rotostay with Profurl. If you like I'll see if I can dig out the drawings I made up to help me convince myself that the lengths were all correct.

I don't know who you're dealing with for the new Profurl, but Stuart at Seateach was very helpful when I was doing this.
