Peter Brown died about 1996 or soon afterwards cos that's the last time he surveyed Mirelle for me. His practice continues as Brown and Overbury; I'll ask Adrian if there are any papers relating to this very lovely boat.
Right, spoke to a couple of folks at HYS today, there is I think only one chap that has been there that long, name Peter Burnard, I have spoken to him before, he apprenticed at Bruce Campbells and when he went bust he went to HYS and stayed there ever since, he's a boat builder, I'll talk to him tomorrow if I can find him, I'll ask him if its ok for you to write to him.
Sent you a message, I am sure its a Otter 36 or 40, friend of mine has a Otter 40, just been to the fatory today in Brundall Norfolk, please contact me if you would like more details
Well someone else has my elderly Lloyds register at the moment. If Buckie is the location then I think the answer is more likely to be Thompson because Jones were well known motor sailer builders of the "Spey" class of their own at the time. Herd and Mackenzie seemed to concentrate on trawler yachts, (one of which I have been proud to own), and Thompson I don't know much about, they had closed down before I went there for the first time so it could be them.
She has the basic "Otter" configuration, aft steering, rounded cabin top, full width aft stateroom, mizzen sail, etc. but she looks longer and sleeker. It might just be a good photo!!
Friends boat is an Otter 40 built by Landermores, Wroxham Norfolk in 1969 she has twin Perkins 4236 engines and is in very good condition, we, by chance, went to the factory this week and spoke to the now managing director who gave my friend drawings, photo's and sales details and even remembered working on his boat though only 16 or so at the time, and yes it is a Jones design.
Well Chaps, I'm bringing this to the top again with an offer that I think is worth a look to any serious classic enthusiast in mind to pick up a bargain! Chela is on the market through Classic Boat ( so I hope I am not breaking any forum rules with this). She had a price tag of €130,000 and Leigh has had some interest at that. His circumstances have altered a little and he is basically open to a sensible offer and I happen to know that the discount he's prepared to offer right now is considerable. Might be time to give him a call on +34 620328610 or e me on ian@courageous.it and I'll print it off and forward it. He's not into 'puters bless!
If my math is OK that's about £89k, just out of a major refit that might be a runner but if any work or updating is required I think he'd need to take quite a big hit on that figure.
There's a recently refitted Otter 36 for sale at Southwold asking £40k, right up my street actually, pity its at Southwold, a place I have poor memories of! Edit: Also seen offered by Temple Marine at Woodbridge (nice people), and said to be at Ipswich, (better to ask there)!
There's another broker offering a 36 footer, also asking £40k, which may or may not be the same boat. Named as "Aqua Sulis", no mention of a refit and they say she's a live-aboard. They also say she was built by "Landamores of Wroxham", which if not already answered may resolve the Scottish question. I always thought they were East Coast boats but some J Francis Jones designs, like Inchcapes, were built all over the place.
I do know of one 36 footer which the owner said he'd paid £29k for, but that was ten years ago anyway, looked to be a nice boat but no refit and the usual list of small jobs to do. I guess 40 footers are going to be a good deal rarer and may be worth a lot more.
Thanks John. Let's not forget that this is no "ordinary" 40 footer either. Convinced that at 45 foot she was a special build...... As I mentioned that converted 89k WAS the starting point for negotiations - not no more it ain't!! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
John - Leigh hasn't appointed a broker at this moment in time but I have hosted a page with some detail/photos on my web site. the link is www.courageous.it/chela.htm For some reason some people only see script when they try to access this page. I don't know why because I have no problem viewing and some of my friends are ok with it too..... Worth a try!
Thanx - Ian
Edited to say that I think I may have fixed this problem now (just for the cynics amongst us......) /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Dunno Casey - are you being cynical? I know a little about website construction but without spending too much time on the problem I was a little curious as to why people couldn't view the data - just code. Having posted this I took another look at the page and noticed that I had spelt Leigh's name incorrectly and so I went to correct this and noticed that the icon for the page on my ftp program was not an IE icon. I have now changed the name of the page placing ".htm" after it and the icon looks normal so perhaps this will be the fix required.......
Advertising it surely is now as I believe I intonated on my earlier post of today and I STILL hope that keith will not be upset by this as Leigh has advertised this with classic boat mag.
Of course anyone with a serious interest can phone the number you gave, but I would still think it would be worthwhile producing a data sheet about the boat, you can go to boats for sale on this web site and see the format.
Registry, British Part 1 registry, small ships register, some other?
Interior layout, cabins, berths, heads
Mechanical equipment domestic, heating, cookers, fridges, etc.
Deck Equipment, Windlass, sail, ropes, fenders etc.
Navigation equipment, autopilot, radio, radar, gps, etc.
Capacities, water, fuel
Speed and range, cruising, top
Some nice pics of the interior to help Mrs Customer aboard
Engines are now pushing 40 years old so any rebuild would obviously be of interest, also details of the refit and why planking, especially for a wood boat in the med, was it infested?
I also think appointing a well known broker is worth the money. Guarantees you proper payment and proper transfer of ownersip for the buyer, brings you to a much wider audience than even this great organ can manage. I'd have a suggestion or two if you needed them.
