Help needed dismantling harken 2 speed self tailing winches

I have Harken 2 speed self tailing halyard winches on my 44 footer. Looking at the exploded view the first step in dismantling them is to remove the screw at the bottom of the well the winch handle fits into. The splined section the winch handle fits into should then come out.

I removed the screw and washer but can not get the splined section to move. Am I missing a circlip or something.

I guess they are overdue a service as they got stiff but are moving freely now albeit with some squeaking.

I have harken two speed sailing winches andonmine when you undo the screw that you have discribed the whole drum then lifts off, just make sure that you do notlose the cotters.

By the looks of it after 6143 is out and its washer then 31759 should pull out. It does not move.

Try pouring some boiling hot water on it. This worked for me on a "stiff" self-tailing winch which wouldn't dismantle a few years ago.

Thanks Jaldi I had not thought of that, can't hurt as long as I keep my toes clear.

From what I remember, once you have taken out the centre screw it comes out quite easily.

I think you will find that you have to rotate the winch slowly clockwise to raise the pawls to the top of the the ratchet mechanism to allow it to be lifted.

Watch for bit's falling out.

I've just serviced the 44.2's on mine, and the splined section on top of the drum can be difficult. Give it some WD40 then wiggle the chromed stripper arm - it will come off eventually. Watch out for the roller and plastic wedge inside the self-tailing jaws - it's got a little spring underneath that can catapult it overboard.

It is possible to lift the whole thing off (drum plus stripper), once you've loosened the spline.

Thanks RH that's the encouragement I am needing.

I will have another go today but as I am currently on my own I feel I need an extra hand as I need to wiggle the splined section out with levers and hold the bag around it to catch the flying springs and pawls which are just itching to go for a swim.

Still working with duct tape I guess I will rig up something.

There aren't any pawls or pawl springs free when you lift off the drum & stripper, so no worry there. But once clear of the spline, the stripper arm will just be sitting on top of the drum and will part company with it unless you hold it there. The drum roller bearing cages (2) will either stay inside the drum or stay on the winch pillar.

Everything seemed to be well lubricated except this small part shown in the pic.

Cleaned everything up greased reassembled and the jobs a good un.

Well, the winch works in both directions and I have nothing left over, this is a good start!

The Pawls should have a "light oil"
