I have a Navman 5500i GPS/plotter and suddenly, after switching on, the display has the appearance you get when you dip a paint roller into a tray of emulsion and roll it over a wall, a bit dry. The colour is red. The affected area is large, over many tens of miles, in the vicinity of my most recent cruising ground and appears both with the integral wold map and when I put a C-Map cartridge in. In all other respects the unit seems to be working. I would guess that there is some corrupt data somewhere in memory and I have carried out a 'Factory Reset' from the main menu. I have googled and not found anything useful. Any suggestions, please?

I am in Spain and sending things back to NZ is not easy as the Post Office is a bit unreliable and couriers are difficult and expensive to arrange for private individuals.

If it is covering the bits where you have been could it be a problem with the tracks display? Does a master reset clear the recorded tracks?

Otherwise the EU distributor for Navman is Plastimo and their UK operation is very helpful. Failing that it is worth e-mailing Navman NZ and asking for help, it might be a simple software problem and new software could be downloaded over the internet to a User cartridge and loaded into the set that way - that is what Navman/Plastimo in the UK did in 5 minutes (whilst I waited) with a faulty 5600.

Master Reset does not erase the tracks but it does reset the total miles and trip miles. Thanks for the suggestion....I will copy off all the tech details in 'about' and email to NZ on Sunday if someone hasn't come up with an answer meanwhile.

Many thanks.

Not the same problem but I got very good service for my 5500i from Navimo (Navman arm of Plastimo) in the UK including a free software upgrade.

They should be able to help

Hi
I have the 5500 did pretty much the same thing with the colours, had to send it away and was diagnosed with a faulty man board, replaced and now working (£220)

This was caused by water getting in

Hope this helps

Solved the problem!

I played around this morning and found that some of the waypoints in the WP list had that odd red colouration (like a dry-ish emulsion paint roller) alongside the WP designation. I deleted all of the WPs which had that colouration (around 8, I think) and the problem went away immediately! I can't really begin to speculate on what was happening unless:-

Maybe there is an area of memory associated with the icon for each WP. Maybe a number of WPs' icons had been loaded by a corrupt pattern? This pattern would paint in the WP list mode and on the map? This is speculation as I don't have any knowledge of the system architecture but there is absolutely no doubt that this was the problem, and the solution.

How did the memory become corrupted? I tend to insert and remove cartridges with the unit powered-up (it's pretty necessary at sea when I want to leave the Navman running the autopilot and use the C-Map on the laptop or radar plotter). Maybe it doesn't like that, and causes corruption? I shall avoid doing that in future.

I will email the chap from Plastimo and point him to this thread so maybe he will drop in with his comments?

Many thanks to all of you who helped /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Some WPTs appear as a red 'X' others as a black 'X' but I can't remember which ones are from which source. What I mean is that one of them, most probably the red ones, came from downloading from a User Card, ie in our case were either downloaded from another C-Map plotter (we have 3, 2 x Navman and 1 old Ratheon B&W one) or from C-Map PC Planner on the computer. Maybe there was some corruption that occurred in a download?
