Well I have now reduced my mariner 3.3 to component parts. A learning exercise really as it was prety dead and I was going to buy a four stroke...but...With the amount of c**p that came out of the carb and the complete blockage of the cooling channels and the 2 bladed impeller...well its not suprising it was alittle unhappy so I'm going to re assemble and give it a whirl..

Questions
1) Where can I but a new impeller from. Local chandlery (who sold me the engine) just gave me a blank look. Is there an on line supplier anywhere for parts

2) The head gasket came out ok. Can I re use it or do I need to get a new one (if so from where) or can I just put on some gasket cream (and where do I get it from).

3) Do I need to locktite the bolts as it goes back together. 3 sheared taking it appart and took some pretty careful drill work to not destroy everything!

Answers and anyother gems that I might need to know gratefully recived

I have never seen a two bladed pump impeller before, are you sure that the other blades arent leying at the bottom of some lake or sea bed?
Try a guy called Hank, of American marine imports.
I used to get all my spares for o,boards from him a few years ago, I am sure he supplies parts for all makes.
phone no,01789491673, or 01675442647.
One of these numbers as they moved primises about a year ago.
Yes renew cyl hd gasket. No dont locktite bolts, put copperslip on them, to prevent them from seizing again, but check them regulary for tightness. otherwise you may have to drill them out the next time.

Any Mariner dealer should be able to sell you an impeller. Or try eBay, this seller might be able to help; email him with your engine's serial number and see what he can do.

If gasket is undamaged, you should be able to re-use it, perhaps with a smear of gasket goo.

I wouldn't loctite the bolts.

/quote] I wouldn't re-use a head gasket. Head gaskets are coated in lacquer and once fitted and hot it's sealed so once removed it's not worth trying to refit as it won't seal properly. Don't put gasket goo on head gaskets, it's not worth it for the cost of a new one.

I wouldnt use copper grease on the threads if they are going into a threaded aluminium hole, copper and aluminium react together if I remember correctly. I think I remember an aluminium boat that had problems where the welder had discarded the copper tips from his MIG welder. I would use a smear of normal grease.

Dont re use gaskets.
Stick a bit of grease on threads and nuts.
They won,t come undone easily so don,t be over enthusiastic when tightenimng them back up!
Probs with outboards is the prox of steel with aluminium.
Creates it's own "Loctite"
Local Chandlery bod is a tosser!
Lake Sailor is correct(for once) don,t frig about with "Gasket Goo" and the like.
Sniff about the engine waterways case any bits of old impellor are hiding.
Impellors have a habit of blocking the waterways when they break up.
Your's definately started life with more than two blades! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Well, I just took a mariner 2.5 apart and rebuilt it - same engine.

Fairweather Marine will supply mariner parts on mail order. the head gasket is around £8. It is sticky coated so needs no additional liquid gasket or the like.

The impellor has more than two fins!

The torque settings for the bolts are all quite low - so don't over do it.

There is no suggestion on the web page for "Copaslip" (That's its correct name) that it is unsuitable for use on aluminium! Or on the data sheet that can be accessed from there.

I agree elementary chemistry suggests it shouldn't. Perhaps the corrosion inhibitors are the key.

Anyone care to click on the "contact us" button and ask them directly?

Personally I have a supply of Moly-Paul PBC (Polybutyl cuprysil) which contains an organo-metallic complex rather than metallic copper.

If you might want to be able to take it to bits at some future point, then use Duralac on the threads of the bolts. It locks then but it also prevents dissimilar metal corrosion.

My old Mariner has a stainless cup in which the impellor rotated. The corrosion between the cup and the majak it sat in used to distort the cup and cause the impellor to seize. Check this carefully before re-building. The symptom was difficulty in getting the engine to rotate on the starter cord ie it got stiff. Cure ir a replacement cup bedded in Duralac.

Having just rebuilt my Yamaha with copper grease on all the threads............... ask me again in 12 months time and I'll see if they come out!

Yacht Parts Group in Plymouth were very good at supplying bits, and will deal via e-mail.

Safe sailing
