Many thanks indeed for your compreshensive reply
I will first try improving the electic installation, but the pump generally doesnt seem to struggle though. I put all new hoses on the installation including a full 2" vent from the holding tank so pretty sure that scale or venting is not the problem.
I think the head is a 29090 but will check in a couple of weeks
I also found the Jabsco suggestion of extending the inlet loop weird, but it is included on the instruction sheet as the action to take to avoid "recycling" that was supplied with the unit - but I note different to the one that is now on their website:

That talks about putting a vented loop on that inlet pipe if the head is below the waterline, which mine only would be perhaps when sailing hard on one tack. It is above the waterline when the boat is level.
Next time I am at the boat I will make a copy of those instructions and forward it on
