I am looking at a boat based in Italy, it has engines identified in the advert as:
VOLVO PENTA
200HP
TURBO DIESEL DUO PROP. 290 AD91
Installed 1993

I have no knowledge of Volvo's engine range and have been on their website trying to find the full specs for these engines (consumption etc etc) with no luck.

Do you know of a more 'common' name for this engine perhaps so I can find some more details?

I am looking here:
http://www.volvo.com/volvopenta/global/en-gb/marineengines/older_engines_1/2002/

Any horror stories about this model??

Cheers
Stef

I would guess that the advert is slightly wrong, and that it is actually an "AD41".

Also known as the AQAD41 (earlier name).

They are generally very reliable if they've been well looked after.

The AD41 was 200 hp so probably a misprint. The 290 is the stern drive. Inside the stern drive there are various pipes and rubber gaiters which should (according to Volvo!) be replaced every 2 years. Check when this (quite expensive) service was last done.

Agree with the other posts that its prob an AD41. The AD41 is a 200HP straight 6 cylinder turbocharged and aftercooled diesel lump that is very robust. I have its baby brothers the AD31s which is almost the same motor but only 4 cylinders.

You don't say how many hours on them but I just opened mine up with 1200 hours on and they are as good inside as the day they were built.

Just get the service history if you can.

Not sure how handy you are, but things like bellows changes on the drives don't have to be done by VP. I do my own and change them every two years as the book suggests.

If you get a survey, have a mechanical survey too and make sure they check the oil in the drives as any sign of water in there can be expensive.

Hope this helps

Cheers

I think also VP recommend a leg oil change every 2 years. I seem to remember with the 290 that there was a changeover to fully synthetic after a particular model number. It may have coincided with duoprop introduction.

On the older outdrives it is def every year.Earlier legs(280) use plain bog std. engine lube oil so expence is prob 5 or ten quid.Do know that the later leg needs super duper expensive synthetic muck. However poster on here did source non-volvo oil which was much cheaper.
