does any one know where I can information on Halvorson Boats., My dad has taken a Fancy to them and wants more info.
Hi Andy
I hope you don’t mind direct approach but I am trying to work out whether to go and see a Single engine Halvorsen at NYA Brundall. Not originally on my wanted list (hardy 32 Mitchell etc) want to do offshore cruising on south coast. But I am concerned whether under powered .
How did you find the boat ? What was it like at sea?
Roger
Well spookily enough the one on with NYA is named ‘Solo’ and it has the Port name of Hythe under the name on the transom. Looking at andyhythe’s profile he had a Halverson 32 named ‘Solo’! It was for sale in Farndon for some time before it went to NYA last year so guessing that he hasn’t owned it for a while.
On your original question the 32 had options for the 315hp single or twin 155hp or 250hp (the largest option). Twins always more popular in the UK as the market tends to like some redundancy and significantly better for close quarters manouvreing. I found a review that said 10 knots cruise and 15 knots flat out (for a huge increase in fuel consumption) for the single 315hp. Ten knots is fine and for a yachtie fast but for a mobo slow. Our S34 has the smallest engine option and cruises at 20-22 knots for a fuel burn not too much higher (I estimate) than the Halvorsen 32 at 10 knots in terms of mpg. No idea what seakeeping is like but at ten knots may not get the stability that some speed can give. Depends what you want I guess.
I had a feeling that may be the case hence my reason for approaching him !!!
I think you have answered my question and whilst the boat looks in superb condition with riculously low engine hours it’s underpowered for what I want.
Now you say that it went to NYA last yea4 I remember it now.
Thanks you have answered what I needed to know... not worth the 6 hour journey to view!!
Much appreciated
Roger
