I have a stainless steel braided pipe that looks rusty and needs replacing.

IMG00349-20110924-2247pipe.jpg

It has solid 8 mm OD crimped ends ( 7.888 mm) 850 mm long but can be longer.

I have searched for fuel pipes but they have round ends like sauce pans/donut ends.
Anyone know where I can get this from ?

Its not a Cummins/CMD/Mercruiser part as it goes from the raw water cooling to the stern gland, connects to solid 8mm pipe either end.

Can I clean cut the old one at the crimp and use jubilee clips to just connect a bit of braided fuel pipe to the ends like this one ?

Its a below the waterline fitting at one end.

(it went rusty when a braised joint above seeped slowly only when running, the joint has been re braised but it took me nearly a season to find it as the heat dried it as soon as I stopped.)

Can you take the pipe off and remove it from your boat?

If so take it to your local branch of Pirtek and they will be able to make up a new pipe whilst you wait. They do have a mobile service but obviously that has a charge associated with it. We last used them for a digger which had sprung a leak where they had to come out to us but in your instance I'd have thought you could pop over to them.

Its a great idea thanks , perhaps not perfect as I'll have to think about the issues caused as its under the water line, not sure how much pressure there would be to stem when removed.

My plan is to buy a replacement in time for lift out (then my plan is to ask Cols to fit it).

I dont really want to leave it until lift out in case I cant get one and it delays relaunch.

I may be wrong, but it looks very similar to a flex gas pipe. The type of thing that connects to a stove hanging in gimballs. Try a Calor gas supplier.

Out of curiosity, is diesel used to cool the stern gland, or what?
Anyhow, I don't see the need for stainless steel braided pipes.
Surely the pressure can't be that high...

Its raw water cooled, I searched for fuel pipe as it looked like fuel pipe, I wouldnt think it is high pressure and I presume if I take it off there will not be a flood as the stern gland will stop it ?????

when I run antifreeze through the raw water there is a flow not a drip from the stern glands outside.

I'll look for gas pipe as per Normans suggestion.

Aha. Well, that's a pretty normal arrangement. I was just struggling with the "fuel pipe"...
Anyway, I rest my case: there's no reason to fit a s/steel braided pipe. Any marine grade rubber hose will be fine.
Re. detaching the pipe, after you close the seacock, the only pressure left - if any - might be from the water inside the engine cooling circuit, assuming that the pipe is lower than the engine pump.
But one finger should be more than enough to stop any water from leaking...

my company sells pipe the same as that, it is used for gas appliances, it comes as a maximum of 1mtr length for LPG and comes with either 8mm or 10mm straight ends, PM me if you need one, they are about £15 from recollection.
