hi-not sure if this is an appropriate post-many apologies if not-but im in a bit of a pickle since the guy who was going to help me with this project has been called away to work elsewhere for the summer...

i have a relatively small job to do: patching-in new ply to the rear section of the starboard gunwhale on my iroko-on-oak, curtis and pape, canoe-stern ketch, and then scarphing in new sections of the strakes over this repair. its shocking that such a lovely, well-made boat, made from high quality timber throughout, has ply and resin gunwhales, but thats how i got her, and i can only afford to repair what is already there currently.....one day i hope to replace them all with quality hardwood timbers, but in the mean time, needs must when the devil drives....i have dug out the old rotten ply and am in the process of preparing the surfaces but to be quite honest i havent got a clue how to scarph new sections onto old, when the old are attached to the boat, and i have no idea how to get enough bend in the ply to fit it to a canoe-stern!! i have no experience and bought this boat to learn about working with wood (!)-i knew a carpenter who was going to help me out and teach me, for no other reason than he's a really nice guy with a passion for wooden boats, but he's now won a really good contract abroad so obviously has to prioritise...

if the forumites could recommend anyone they know in the local area who could help out by proffering me advice on-site and working alongside me on the boat, (doesnt have to be a pro-just someone who knows what he's talking about) it would be much appreciated. i obviously dont expect something for nothing-ive got some money put aside for this but i couldnt afford professional boatyard prices and, anyway, i wouldnt learn anything myself if i just paid a boatyard to do it...

any recommendations greatfully received....

many thanks in advance

ryan
