Helmsman licence in France

Was going to take the day skipper test to get my ICC to get my CEVNI but decided to do the 5 day course rather than just the test ( should be fun!!)

We plan to take a very long trip through the French canals and I have several trusted friends to crew but who may also care to take the boat part of the way without me around.

What is their requirement CEVNI wise? Has this RYA inland waterways 'helmsman certificate' any validity? Any major insurance issues?

Page 2 has a qualifications list.

The IWHC is valid for the ICC Inland.

Whoever is skipper will need the ICC and CEVNI. Don't know about insurance, best to talk to your insurer?

The Day Skipper Practical is not a test - it is a certificate of competence after the 5 days, so you can't do it as a test alone; though you can take an ICC test alone.
 
Thanks, yes I meant to do the ICC test but find that it costs quite a bit anyway so more fun to do the whole dayskipper course and not a lot more brass.

So my 'crew' can do the helmsmans course, do the online CEVNI and then are legal to use my boat on the French canals?

I think you can get the ICC on the basis of the Day Skipper Practical course completion certificate.

This was revealing.
Just discovered the RYA helmsmans course I took a couple of years ago entitles me to to the ICC. I just assumed that the ICC was some sort of higher qualification.
I've got to say that when I took the Helmsmans course I honestly didn't have a clue and it's only because I practiced week after week various manouveres that I feel capable, not because I have a piece pf paper stating I took RYA course.
My son and son in law also took the Helmsmans course and it would seem that they are also entitled to the ICC even thought they haven't spent more than an hour on the boat since taking the course.
 
The ICC is based on a very simple set of criteria, as is the CEVNI test to validate it for some inland waterways in Europe.
